7 March 1671 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero.
Rob Roy was born in the Kingdom of Scotland at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were the local Clan MacGregor Tacksman, Donald Glas MacGregor, and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother.
In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary MacGregor of Comar (16711745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James Mor MacGregor (16951754), Ranald (17061786), Coll (died 1735) and Robert (17151754)known as Robìn Òig or Young Rob.
Along with many Highland clansmen, at the age of eighteen Rob Roy MacGregor together with his father joined the Jacobite rising of 1689 led by John Graham, 1st Viscount Dundee and Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, to support the Stuart King James VII, whose flight from Britain had been declared by Parliament to be an abdication, following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Although victorious in initial battles, Dundee was killed at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, deflating the rebellion. MacGregor's father was taken to jail, where he was held on high treason charges for two years. MacGregor's mother Margaret's health failed during Donald's time in prison. By the time Donald was finally released, his wife was dead.

It originally opened in 1750 as the result of a bequest by Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant who made his fortune from trading with Baltic ports, and was known at foundation as Robert Gordon's Hospital. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXH8Y - Today there are 28 public libraries in the Scottish capital[2] but, as the first, the creation of Central Library was funded with £50,000 from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. At the opening ceremony a telegram from Carnegie was read out stating: We trust that this Library is to grow in usefullness year after year, and prove one of the most potent agencies for the good of the people for all time to come.
The site selected for the library was the former home of Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet Hope of Craighall, advocate for King Charles I. The structure, built in 1616, was demolished in March of 1887 to make way for the library. The lintel from Hope's home, bearing the carved inscription TECUM HABITA 1616 from the fourth satire of Persius, is preserved above an inner doorway of the library.
Carnegie's funding was initially an offer of £25,000 in 1886 which was doubled, overcoming prior opposition to the establishment of a public library, the citylast of those to do so in Scotlandadopted the Public Libraries Act and on 9 July 1887, Carnegie laid the foundation stone of architect George Washington Browne's French Renaissance-styled building.

It was built in 1806 as the Head Office of Bank of Scotland. Today it is also the registered office and Scottish Headquarters of Lloyds Banking Group.
In 1796, at the Bank of Scotland's 100th AGM, its directors decided to commission a purpose-built head office. It took some time to find a suitable location, due to the cramped nature of Edinburgh's Old Town. Eventually, in 1800, the site at the top of the Mound was purchased from Edinburgh Town Council. It cost £3,500. Construction started soon after, to a design by Robert Reid and Richard Crichton. These were former pupils of the celebrated architect Robert Adam. Their building was a detached Georgian-style villa, topped by a shallow saucer dome. It was completed in August 1806.
The Challenge of the Mound
Straddling Edinburgh's Old and New Towns, the site posed grave challenges for the builders. Firstly, there was a steep drop of 16 metres from front to back. A more serious issue was instability: the 'earthen Mound' (as it was known) was a man-made hill, created from the earth excavated for the New Town. The site had also been a rubbish dump in the past, and contained vast quantities of household waste!
Consequently, there was a serious risk of slippage. To overcome this, a substantial retaining wall was constructed on the north side of the building.
By the 1850s, the building was proving unsatisfactory. It was now too small for the Bank's growing business. There had also been complaints that it looked stark and ugly when viewed from Princes Street. Indeed, the famous judge Lord Cockburn described it as a 'prominent deformity'. Seeking to resolve these issues, several architects were invited to submit plans for extending and improving the building.
The directors eventually selected David Bryce. His solution was to add full-height wings to the east and west, tied back to the original building.

baptised 7 March 1671 died 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero. The name Roy comes from Gaelic Ruadh meaning Red, and referred to his red hair. Rob Roy was born at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were Donald Glas MacGregor and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Macdonalds of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother. In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary Helen MacGregor of Comar (1671-1745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James, Ranald, Coll and Robert (known as Robin Oig or Young Rob). They also adopted a cousin named Duncan.

Transport operator Abellio is bracing for a battle with the Scottish Government to hold on to its Scotrail franchise as fresh data showed the number of delayed trains is increasing.
The Dutch company has admitted that its performance is not good enough but said after a scathing attack at the weekend from the Scottish Government that it would have no problem competing with a public-sector bidder for Scotrail.
Abellio won the franchise to run Scotland's train services until 2025 two years ago, but has since been fined £438,000 due to continued delays on its trains.
