Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJBA - Edinburgh Tram stopped at the Newhaven terminus on Newhaven Place, Edinburgh, postcode EH6 4DF. The image shows a modern low-floor tram at the platform with overhead power lines and passenger facilities, illustrating contemporary urban public transport infrastructure in the north of the city.
The Newhaven extension forms part of the Edinburgh Trams network linking the city centre with Leith and the waterfront areas, significantly improving public transport connectivity between residential districts, employment areas, and key visitor destinations. The tram system is designed to support sustainable travel by providing a reliable alternative to private car use.
Newhaven has a long maritime and industrial history as part of the wider Leith area, and the arrival of the tram represents a major investment in regeneration and urban mobility. The integration of modern light rail vehicles into existing streetscapes highlights the balance between historic urban environments and contemporary transport needs.
Photographed in daylight under overcast skies, the image documents everyday tram operations and is suitable for editorial use relating to public transport policy, sustainable cities, urban infrastructure investment, and life in modern Edinburgh.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGHK3 - Lufthansa operate up to four return flights daily between Manchester and Franfurt
Deutsche Lufthansa AG commonly shortened to Lufthansa, serves as the flag carrier of Germany. When combined with its subsidiaries, it stands as the second-largest airline in Europe in terms of passengers carried, after the ultra low-cost carrier Ryanair. Lufthansa is also one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, which is the world's largest airline alliance, formed in 1997.
Besides its own services, and owning subsidiary passenger airlines Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings (referred to in English by Lufthansa as its Passenger Airline Group), Deutsche Lufthansa AG owns several aviation-related companies, such as Lufthansa Technik and LSG Sky Chefs, as part of the Lufthansa Group. In total, the group has over 700 aircraft, making it one of the largest airline fleets in the world.
Lufthansa's registered office and corporate headquarters are in Cologne. The main operations base, called Lufthansa Aviation Center, is at Lufthansa's primary hub at Frankfurt Airport, and its secondary hub is at Munich Airport where a secondary Flight Operations Centre is maintained.
The company was founded as Luftag in 1953 by staff of the former Deutsche Luft Hansa that had been politically connected to the government of Nazi Germany and dissolved after World War II. Luftag continued the traditional branding of the German flag carrier by acquiring the Luft Hansa name and logo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28BJ - Emirates (Arabic: ???????????? ????????????? DMG: ?ayarn Al-Imrt) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (the other being Etihad). Based in Garhoud, Dubai, the airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai. As of 2019, it was also the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 3,600 flights per week from its hub at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. It operates to more than 150 cities in 80 countries across all continents (except Antarctica) through its fleet of nearly 300 aircraft. Cargo activities are undertaken by Emirates SkyCargo.
Emirates is the world's fourth-largest airline by scheduled revenue passenger-kilometers flown, and the second-largest in terms of freight tonne-kilometers flown.
During the mid-1980s, Gulf Air began to cut back its services to Dubai. As a result, Emirates was conceived on 15 March 1985, with backing from Dubai's royal family, with Pakistan International Airlines giving two of the airline's first aircraft. With $10 million in start-up capital, it was required to operate independently of government subsidy. Pakistan International Airlines provided free training facilities to Emirates' cabin crew at Karachi airport. The airline was headed by Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the airline's present chairman. In the years following its founding, the airline expanded both its fleet and its destinations. In October 2008, Emirates moved all operations at Dubai International Airport to Terminal 3.
Emirates operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing wide-body aircraft, and is one of the few airlines to operate an all-wide-body aircraft fleet (excluding Emirates Executive). As of December 2021, Emirates is the largest Airbus A380 operator with 119 aircraft in service, and with one aircraft having been retired. Since its introduction, the Airbus A380 has become an integral part of the Emirates fleet, especially on long-haul, high-density routes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28EP - EasyJet plc (styled as easyJet) is a British multinational low-cost airline group headquartered at London Luton Airport. It operates domestic and international scheduled services on 927 routes in more than 34 countries via its affiliate airlines EasyJet UK, EasyJet Switzerland, and EasyJet Europe. EasyJet plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. EasyGroup Holdings Ltd, the investment vehicle of the airline's founder, Greek-Cypriot businessman Stelios Haji-Ioannou, is the largest shareholder with a 15.27% stake (as of September 2021). It employs circa 13,000 people, based throughout Europe but mainly in the UK.
Since its establishment in 1995, EasyJet has expanded through a combination of acquisitions, and base openings fuelled by consumer demand for low-cost air travel. The group, along with associate companies EasyJet UK, EasyJet Europe and EasyJet Switzerland, operates 308 aircraft. It has 29 bases across Europe, the largest being Gatwick. In 2014, the airline carried more than 65 million passengers, making it the second-largest budget airline in Europe by number of passengers carried, behind Ryanair.
EasyJet was featured in the television series Airline, broadcast on ITV (1998?2007), which followed the airline's operations at London Luton and later at other bases. Its pilot training scheme was the subject of another ITV television series, easyJet: Inside the Cockpit, which premiered in August 2017.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28M5 - Jet2holidays is a British package holiday provider and tour operator. It was formed in 2007 as a subsidiary of Dart Group PLC (now renamed Jet2 PLC), and a sister to Jet2.com, the third-largest scheduled airline in the UK.[1] As of 2018, Jet2holidays is the second-largest tour operator in the United Kingdom, by ATOL licenses granted.[2][3]
History
Jet2holidays was founded in June 2007. Upon launch, Jet2holidays provided package holidays from Jet2.com's six bases in Leeds, Manchester, Belfast, Newcastle, Blackpool and Edinburgh. It began operations at East Midlands Airport in May 2010[4] and announced an expansion to Glasgow Airport later that year.[5] In 2014, Blackpool Airport closed, taking the company back down to seven bases.[6]
By March 2015, Jet2holidays was providing package holidays to one million customers per year.[7] The following month, it created Jet2CityBreaks, a subsidiary specialising in shorter holidays to its city destinations.[8]
In April 2017, Jet2holidays became available from nine bases after the company announced an expansion to Birmingham Airport and London Stansted Airport. On 7 June 2017, Jet2holidays launched Jet2Villas, expanding its portfolio of self-catered package holidays.[9] Later that month, it celebrated ten years of operation, and had sold over seven million package holidays.[10]

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28P0 - Ethiopian Airlines (commonly referred to as Ethiopian), formerly Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL), is the flag carrier of Ethiopia, and is wholly owned by the country's government. EAL was founded on 21 December 1945 and commenced operations on 8 April 1946, expanding to international flights in 1951. The firm became a share company in 1965 and changed its name from Ethiopian Air Lines to Ethiopian Airlines.
The airline has been a member of the International Air Transport Association since 1959 and of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) since 1968. Ethiopian is a Star Alliance member, having joined in December 2011. The company slogan is The New Spirit of Africa. Ethiopian's hub and headquarters are at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, from where it serves a network of 125 passenger destinations?20 of them domestic?and 44 freighter destinations. The airline has secondary hubs in Togo and Malawi. Ethiopian is Africa's largest airline in terms of passengers carried, destinations served, fleet size, and revenue. Ethiopian is also the world's fourth-largest airline by the number of countries served.
A CNN investigation alleged that Ethiopian Airlines Cargo airplanes transported weapons to airports in Eritrea during the Tigray War. The airline billed Ethiopia's Ministry of Defence at least six times in November 2020. The article's reporter claimed that using civil aircraft to smuggle military weapons violates international aviation law

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NW51H9 - Qatar Airways Company Q.C.S.C. operating as Qatar Airways, is the state-owned flag carrier airline of Qatar. Headquartered in the Qatar Airways Tower in Doha, the airline operates a hub-and-spoke network, using a fleet of more than 200 aircraft. Qatar Airways Group employs more than 43,000 people. The carrier has been a member of the Oneworld alliance since October 2013, the first Persian Gulf carrier to sign with one of the three major airline alliances.
The State of Qatar was a joint-owner member of Gulf Air along with Oman, The UAE (only the Emirate of Abu Dhabi), and Kingdom of Bahrain, until May 2002, following its withdrawal. It became the first country among the three to withdraw from the Airline to solely focus on its own airline Qatar Airways, although it remained a member of the airline for six months after the government announced its complete withdrawal.
Foundation
Qatar Airways was established by the government of Qatar on November 22, 1993
operations started on January 20, 1994
The Qatar Airways Group ?which included Qatar Airways, Doha International Airport and corporate business air services, ground handling and in-flight catering companies? reported its first profit ever for the fiscal year (FY) that ended on March 2004
In 2013, The Economist claimed that a perusal of online forums used by cabin crew suggests that Qatar has a reputation for severity among industry professionals, including allegations of harsh treatment and overbearing scrutiny are commonplace, and that the conditions laid down by Qatar Airways go beyond more familiar rules ... the employee can be fired if she becomes pregnant (which she is contractually obliged to disclose 'from the date of her knowledge of its occurrence'). The airways' CEO Akbar Al Baker has previously stated, We are not running an intelligence agency, we are an airline company. The reason why I know everything happening in the company is ... Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M369GH - Edinburgh Trams is a tramway in Edinburgh, Scotland, operated by Edinburgh Trams Ltd. It is a 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) line between St Andrew Square in the New Town and Edinburgh Airport, with 15 stops.
Construction began in June 2008, and after encountering delays it opened on 31 May 2014. The scheme had an initial estimated cost of ?375 million in 2003, but by May 2008, when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to ?521 million. The final cost after delays was ?776 million.
After running for two years, the scheme had achieved pre-tax profitability (excluding maintenance and infrastructure costs) and exceeded the original ridership targets. It has run at an operating loss since 2018 (e.g. ????9.4 million in 2018). On 14 March 2019, Edinburgh Council voted to approve the extension of the existing line from York Place to Newhaven. The extended line is due to be operational by early 2023

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AJRRJR - Manchester Airport Holdings Limited, trading as MAG (originally Manchester Airports Group) is a holding company which is owned by the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, in North West England, and Australian investment fund IFM Investors. Founded in 2001 following the acquisition of East Midlands Airport, MAG is the largest UK-owned airport operator, following the purchase of BAA by Spain's Ferrovial Group in 2006. MAG owns three British airports, East Midlands and Manchester Airport (which is the busiest airport outside the London region), as well as London Stansted Airport. In the 2017/18 financial year, 58.9 million passengers used MAG airports.
Of the ten metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester, Manchester City Council holds the largest stake, at 35.5%. The remaining nine councils hold a total of 29%. IFM Investors own a 35.5% stake in MAG. The Group has its registered office at Manchester Town Hall. MAG operates on a commercial basis at arm's length from its public owners who only take a dividend from profits. This was ?20 million in 2010 while MAG retained ?80 million from the ?100 million profit
Manchester Airport opened in 1938 and was funded by Manchester City Council and has remained in public ownership ever since. It is the third-busiest airport in the United Kingdom after Heathrow and Gatwick and is fractionally busier than Stansted (see Busiest airports in the United Kingdom by total passenger traffic). The M56 motorway was built to serve the airport in 1972, a new rail station was opened in 1993 and a second runway was completed in 1997.
From https://www.mantp.co.uk/about/ - Manchester Airport is investing more than ?1bn to give the North the world class international gateway it deserves. The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MAN-TP) will modernise and transform the customer service experience we are able to offer passengers and to airlines whilst allowing the airport to continue in its role as job creator

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AJRRK9 - Heading through the airport as you start your holiday can be a stressful experience ? and being forced to drag multiple cases behind you is a sure-fire way to make it all the more miserable. Sadly, this could be the fate that awaits at many UK airports.
Forget to stock up with change before heading to the terminal and you could be met by a collection of locked luggage trolleys refusing to surrender themselves to your bags until you feed them gold?
Bristol and Luton take the title of most expensive airports for luggage trolleys with a non-refundable charge of ?2, but you will be able to save yourself around 43p by using an old ?2 coin instead.
If you do turn up at the airport without any shrapnel, just hope you're departing from Birmingham or Luton, where travellers are given option of paying by card ? even if the former does add a 40p admin fee to your ?1 outlay.
It's not all a big money-grab, though. While many airports charge for the trolley, you will get the money back ? supermarket style ? when you return it. Even better, though, others ? including Heathrow ? still provide trolleys for free without even the need for a deposit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84KJK - Etihad Airways (Arabic: ??????????? ???????????????????? ?????????????????????, romanized: sharikat al-itti?d li-??-??ayarn) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (the other being Emirates). Its head office is in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, near Abu Dhabi International Airport. Etihad commenced operations in November 2003.[2] It is the second-largest airline in the UAE after Emirates. The name Etihad is Arabic for 'Union'.
The airline operates more than 1,000 flights per week to over 120 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, with a fleet of 102 Airbus and Boeing aircraft as of February 2020. In 2015, Etihad carried 14.8 million passengers, a 22.3% increase from the previous year, delivering revenues of US$9.02 billion and net profits of US$103 million. Its main base is Abu Dhabi International Airport.
In addition to its core activity of passenger transportation, Etihad also operates Etihad Holidays and Etihad Cargo. Etihad established its airline alliance, Etihad Airways Partners, in October 2015 which was disbanded in 2018 after several of its members fell into financial difficulties. Etihad Airways holds minority equity investments in the participating airlines, as well as having had a stake in Virgin Australia, until its insolvency in April 2020 with no return on investment. Booking for these airlines was consolidated under one network.
The emirate of Abu Dhabi was a joint-owner of Gulf Air along with Bahrain, Qatar, and the Sultanate of Oman. Abu Dhabi International Airport was one of Gulf Air's bases and hubs from the 1970s until September 2005, when Abu Dhabi withdrew from the airline, leaving it an Oman and Bahrain-owned airline until the former's exit in 2007 to focus on Oman Air.
In July 2003, future UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who wanted an airline for Abu Dhabi, issued a Royal (Amiri) Decree that established Etihad Airways as the second flag carrier of the UAE

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNK8 - Berlin Tempelhof Airport (German: Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof) (formerly IATA: THF, ICAO: EDDI) was one of the first airports in Berlin, Germany. Situated in the south-central Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Sch??neberg, the airport ceased operating in 2008 amid controversy, leaving Tegel and Sch??nefeld as the two main airports serving the city for another twelve years until both were replaced by Berlin Brandenburg Airport in 2020.
Tempelhof was designated as an airport by the Reich Ministry of Transport on 8 October 1923. The old terminal was originally constructed in 1927. In anticipation of increasing air traffic, the Nazi government began an enormous reconstruction in the mid-1930s. While it was occasionally cited as the world's oldest operating commercial airport, the title was disputed by several other airports, and is no longer an issue since its closure.
Tempelhof was one of Europe's three iconic pre-World War II airports, the others being London's now defunct Croydon Airport and the old Paris?Le Bourget Airport. It acquired a further iconic status as the centre of the Berlin Airlift of 1948?49. One of the airport's most distinctive features is its huge, canopy-style roof extending over the apron, able to accommodate most contemporary airliners in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, protecting passengers from the elements. Tempelhof Airport's main building was once among the twenty largest buildings on earth, but it also formerly contained the world's smallest duty-free shop.
Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008, despite the efforts of some protesters to prevent the closure. A non-binding referendum was held on 27 April 2008 against the impending closure but failed due to low voter turnout. The former airfield has subsequently been used as a recreational space known as Tempelhofer Feld. In September 2015, it was announced that Tempelhof would also become an emergency refugee camp.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGPHAJ - Liverpool South Parkway station is a railway station and bus interchange in the Garston district of Liverpool, England. It serves, via a bus link, Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the neighbouring suburb of Speke, as well as providing an interchange between main line services and the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network.
The station is located towards the southern end of Merseyrail's Northern Line and on the junction of two main lines: the City Line from Liverpool to Manchester via Warrington and the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line to London via Crewe.
Allerton Traction Maintenance Depot is situated to the immediate east of the station.
As the orbital route had been closed, the impetus to eventually complete the station was to improve public transport access to the expanding Liverpool John Lennon Airport, and also to provide new journey opportunities for rail passengers in south Liverpool by giving easy interchange between Northern Line, City Line and West Coast Main Line services.
Construction began in 2004. Allerton station closed in July 2005 and the new station was built on its site. The concourse, bus station and car park were built on land that was once the home of South Liverpool F.C. An information board situated on the footpath towards the main road explains the history of the site. The station opened on 11 June 2006, the day after Garston station closed.
At the time of opening, the Merseyrail City Line service (which had been hourly at the former Allerton station) was increased to half-hourly. The station also became an additional stop on the Liverpool-Birmingham service (then operated by Central Trains). From 11 December 2006, the Monday-Saturday evening service on the Northern Line was increased to run every 15 minutes, instead of half-hourly as previously.
Initially, many long-distance services omitted Liverpool South Parkway from their timetables.

It is operated by Fraport and serves as the main hub for Lufthansa including Lufthansa CityLine and Lufthansa Cargo as well as Condor and AeroLogic. The airport covers an area of 2,300 hectares (5,683 acres) of land and features two passenger terminals with a capacity of approximately 65 million passengers per year, four runways and extensive logistics and maintenance facilities.
Frankfurt Airport is the busiest airport by passenger traffic in Germany as well as the 4th busiest in Europe after London Heathrow Airport, Paris?Charles de Gaulle Airport and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The airport is also the 13th busiest worldwide by total number of passengers in 2016,[6] with 60.786 million passengers using the airport in 2016. In 2017 Frankfurt Airport handled 64.500 million passengers and in 2018 nearly 70 million. It also had a freight throughput of 2.076 million metric tonnes in 2015 and is the busiest airport in Europe by cargo traffic. As of summer 2017, Frankfurt Airport serves more than 300 destinations in 5 continents, making it the airport with the most direct routes in the world.
The southern side of the airport ground was home to the Rhein-Main Air Base, which was a major air base for the United States from 1947 until 2005, when the air base was closed and the property was acquired by Fraport. In 2017, passengers at the airport increased by 6.1% to 64,500,386 compared to 2016. The airport celebrated its 80th anniversary in July 2016

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKEYT - Bayer AG is a German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Headquartered in Leverkusen, where its illuminated corporate logo, the Bayer cross, is a landmark, Bayer's areas of business include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals
consumer healthcare products
agricultural chemicals and biotechnology products
and high-value polymers. The company is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index. Werner Baumann has been CEO since 2016.
Founded in Barmen in 1863 as a dyestuffs factory, Bayer's first and best-known product was aspirin. In 1898 Bayer trademarked the name heroin for the drug diacetylmorphine and marketed it as a cough suppressant and non-addictive substitute for morphine until 1910. Bayer also introduced phenobarbital
prontosil, the first widely used antibiotic and the subject of the 1939 Nobel Prize in Medicine
the antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin)
and Yaz (drospirenone) birth control pills.
In 1925 Bayer was one of six chemical companies that merged to form IG Farben, the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical company. The Allied Control Council seized IG Farben after World War II, because of its role in the Nazi war effort and involvement in the Holocaust, which included using slave labour from concentration camps. It was split into its six constituent companies in 1951, then split again into three: BASF, Bayer and Hoechst.
Bayer played a key role in the Wirtschaftswunder in post-war West Germany, quickly regaining its position as one of the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical corporations. In 2006 the company acquired Schering, in 2014 it acquired Merck & Co.'s consumer business, with brands such as Claritin, Coppertone and Dr. Scholl's, and in 2018 it acquired Monsanto, a leading producer of genetically engineered crops, for $63 billion. Bayer CropScience develops genetically modified crops and pesticides.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said The simplicity of its design, scale and quality is a bold statement reflecting the importance of Great Yorkshire Way as the gateway into Yorkshire and driver of economic growth for the local and regional economy.
Most of the Chris Brammall team were involved in the fabrication of the sculpture in our workshop in Ulverston and the piece was fitted by a three man team - Phil, Paul and Duncan.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1T9 - Manchester Airport (IATA: MAN, ICAO: EGCC) is an international airport in Ringway, Manchester, England, 7.5 nautical miles (13.9 km
8.6 mi) south west of Manchester city centre. In 2015, it was the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of passenger numbers. The airport comprises three terminals, a goods terminal and is the only British airport other than London's Heathrow Airport to operate two runways over 3,280 yd (2,999 m) in length. Manchester Airport has flights to around 225 destinations, and the airport covers an area of 560 hectares (1,400 acres).
Officially opened on 25 June 1938, it was initially known as Ringway Airport. In the Second World War, as RAF Ringway, it was a base for the Royal Air Force. The airport is owned and managed by the Manchester Airports Group (MAG), a holding company owned by the Australian finance house IFM Investors and the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, with Manchester City Council owning the largest stake.
Ringway, after which the airport was named, is a village with a few buildings and church at the southern edge of the airport. The airport handled 23.1 million passengers in 2015, a record high and has capacity for up to 50 million passengers annually. This potential figure is limited by the airport's restriction to 61 aircraft movements per hour.[9] Future developments include the ?800 million Manchester Airport City logistics, manufacturing, office and hotel space next to the airport and transport improvements such as the SEMMMS relief road and a High Speed 2 station.

I remember discovering this on the Stanley Road album when Weller was being confirmed in Q etc as 'The Guvnor'. His Style Council days were thankfully by then behind him. This is pretty much a perfect album. Collaborations from Steve Winwood, Noel Gallagher and Steve Cradock of OCS (that's Ocean Colour Scene, not Office Cleaning Services in case you were wondering) pepper the album and (hope you like the link), the classic cover was designed by Peter Blake, designer of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album.
Paul Weller was actually born 'John William Weller' 25th May 1958, in Sheerwater, near Woking, Surrey. Weller was born into a working-class family. His father worked in the building trade as a scaffolder and a bricklayer, and his mother worked as a cleaner. Weller was brought up in Stanley Road, Woking in a Victorian council house, which had an outside toilet but neither hot running water nor central heating.
Woking is the town in which the Martians first land in H. G. Wells' science fiction novel The War of the Worlds. If you have ever been there you will realise why.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool, England is situated on the junction of Hope Street and Hardman Street, diagonally opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Locally it is referred to as the Philharmonic Pub or simply the Phil. Designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas for the brewers Robert Cain &
Company, it opened in 1898. The exterior is in the Art Nouveau style.
As requested here is a shot of the famous Adament urinals. These can be visited by women by request. No trip to Liverpool is complete without a visit here. The architect of the Phil, and other pubs was Walter Thomas.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4531312643 - 'The red telephone box, was a british public telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Its often still seen throughout streets of the UK, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar despite now being an endangered species. Red boxes can still be seen in many places and current or ex-British Colonies around the world. The colour red was aparently chosen to make them easy to spot.
The red telephone box was the result of a competition in 1924 to design a kiosk that would be acceptable to the London Metropolitan Boroughs which had hitherto resisted the Post Office's effort to erect its early ugly K1 kiosks on their streets. Despite The Birmingham Civic Society trying to railroad proceedings with a concrete design of its own.
The organisers invited entries from three respected architects and, along with the designs from the Post Office and from The Birmingham Civic Society, the Fine Arts Commission judged the competition and selected the design submitted by Giles Gilbert Scott. The invitation had come at the time when Scott had been made a trustee of Sir John Soane's Museum \u2014 his design for the competition was in the classical style, but topped with a dome reminiscent of Soane's self-designed mausoleums in St Pancras' Old Churchyard and Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. (The original wooden prototypes of the entries were later put into public service at under-cover sites around London. That of Scott's design is the only one known to survive and is still where it was placed all those years ago, in the entrance arch to the Royal Academy.)
The Post Office chose to make Scott's winning design in cast iron (Scott had suggested mild steel) and to paint it red (Scott had suggested silver, with a 'greeny-blue' interior) and, with other minor changes of detail, it was brought into service as the Kiosk No.2 or K2. From 1926 K2 was deployed in and around London and the K1 continued to be erected elsewhere. A cheaper K3 was also designed for intended rolout nationwide.
K4 (designed by the Post Office Engineering Department in 1927) incorporated a post box and machines for buying postage stamps on the exterior. Only 50 kiosks of this design were built. I believe Warrington still has one of these near Bridgefoot.
In 1935 the K6 (kiosk number six) was designed to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V and this spread until 1970 throughout the UK. The futuristic (for the time and fairly unloved) K8 was introduced in 1970.
There was never a K9. This name was taken by the fictional robotic dogs in Doctor Who, and its also seen in the spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures
The red telephone box is indeed a potent symbol of Britain (along with red routemaster buses) and lightweight replica K6 telephone kiosks are manufactured as flat-packs by commercial vendors and are shipped around the world for installation in such places as bars, restaurants and offices. The British red phone box, a definite classic.

Ste\u00f2rnabhagh in Gaelic is a burgh on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides of western Scotland.
The town's population is approximately 9,000 out of a total population of more than 26,00 for the whole of the Western Isles chain. The town is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council or CNES ). Christian observance of the Sabbath is an important aspect of the town's culture and on Sunday the town is grid-locked by church going folk, getting in and out of the town.
Indeed until recently there were no flights or ferries to Lewis on Sunday and (thankfully) no newspapers that day.
Stornoway was originally a Viking settlement and developed around its well sheltered natural harbour. The name Stornoway itself is derived from 'Stjornavagr', an Old Norse word for 'steering bay'.
The annual Hebridean Celtic Festival is a 4-day community led festival which attracts over 10,000 visitors during July of each year. The Royal National Mod has been held in Stornoway on a number of occasions.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3828011848 - 'The historic site over 4000 years old on the west coast of the isle of Lewis, outer Hebrides. Easiest way to reach it is via Stornoway (main port and airport). The layout of the monument is in the shape of a distorted Celtic cross.
These Callanish Stones (or 'Callanish I'), Clachan Chalanais or Tursachan Chalanais in Gaelic, are situated near the village of Callanish (Gaelic: Calanais) on the west coast of the isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), Scotland. Construction of the site probably took place around 2900 and 2600 BC, though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC. A tomb was later built into the site. Thirteen primary stones form a circle about 13 metres in diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north, and shorter stone rows to the east, south, and west (possibly incomplete avenues). The overall layout of the monument recalls a distorted Celtic cross. The individual stones vary from around 1 m to 5 m in height, with an average of 4 metres, and are of the local course Lewisian gneiss.
The site is very haunting at sunset when the visitors have gone.

The airport is owned and managed by the Manchester Airport Holdings (trading as MAG), a holding company owned by the Australian finance house IFM Investors and the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, with Manchester City Council owning the largest stake. Ringway, after which the airport was named, is a village with a few buildings and a church at the western edge of the airport.
Future developments include the ?800 million Airport City Manchester logistics, manufacturing, office and hotel space next to the airport. Ongoing and future transport improvements include the ?290 million Eastern Link relief road, which opened in October 2018. A High Speed 2 station known as Manchester Airport High Speed station, earmarked for opening in 2033, will create a regular sub-ten-minute shuttle service for connecting rail passengers between central Manchester and the Airport while relieving stress on the Styal Line to the Airport from Manchester which has become one of the most congested routes on the National Rail network

The ?1 billion expansion will be completed in 2024 and enable Terminal 2 to handle 35 million passengers. Capacity exists for up to 50 million passengers annually with two runways
[10] however, this potential figure is limited by the airport's restriction to 61 aircraft movements per hour as well as existing terminal sizes to process arrivals and departures effectively.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYBHA3 - A Prayer Room is an opportunity to draw aside, take time out and meet with God. It is a dedicated space where people can go to pray and seek God, to intercede and petition. Jesus withdrew to pray (Mt 14:13
Lk 5:12-16
Jn 6:14-16), not at the expense of serving the Father but in order to be more effective in that.
The key is not about the physical space but about making space for relationship with God who from the beginning of time longs to be with His people and connect with them. We know that God is everywhere and we can meet with God anywhere and everywhere, but a Prayer Room with time and place set aside can be an important part of growing in relationship with God. It's a great addition to be part of continual prayer in local church life and helpful being in a place with no distractions with focuses for prayer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ERC - In a diesel?hydraulic multiple unit (DHMU), a hydraulic torque converter, a type of fluid coupling, acts as the transmission medium for the motive power of the diesel engine to turn the wheels. Some units feature a hybrid mix of hydraulic and mechanical transmissions, usually reverting to the latter at higher operating speeds as this decreases engine RPM and noise.
The British Rail Class 185 Desiro is a class of diesel-hydraulic multiple-unit (DHMU) passenger trains built by Siemens Transportation Systems in Germany for the train operating company First TransPennine Express. They are currently operated by TransPennine Express.
A ?260 million order for 51 three-car trains and associated maintenance depots was placed in 2003, and deliveries took place between 2006 and 2007.
In 2003, First TransPennine Express (FTPE), a consortium of FirstGroup and Keolis, was awarded the TransPennine Express (TPE) franchise. One obligation under the franchise agreement was to introduce a new fleet of diesel multiple units, capable of operating at speeds up to 100 mph (160 km/h). Also specified was air conditioning, two toilets per vehicle with one suitable for reduced-mobility passengers, gangways between individual carriages, luggage and bicycle storage space, passenger compartment CCTV, provision for wheelchair passengers, and first-class seating. Additionally, the train's acceleration was to be an improvement on the Class 158, and comparable to the Class 180. The agreement specified 168 carriages, with an initial option to reduce the carriage order by 18
The franchise agreement also required the construction of two depots for the new rolling stock
the main depot was to be at Manchester, with a depot for stabling and maintenance at York. In addition, a depot at Cleethorpes was to be upgraded with refuelling and controlled emission toilet servicing facilities, and a train electric auxiliary supply.

Each row ends with a pair of green and red lights which flash to indicate that flight is boarding. They indicate each flight's destination, its flight number and carrier, and its departure gate and time.
Platform split-flap displays are used across the Deutsche Bahn network, though mostly being replaced by liquid crystal displays.
