Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J3K - This image shows exterior signage for the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Breakthrough Church, located on St George's Road in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The sign prominently displays the church name, service times, and contact details, serving both as wayfinding and as an invitation to the local community.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God is a global Pentecostal Christian denomination founded in Nigeria and now established across the UK, Europe, and North America. RCCG congregations often play an important role within African and wider Christian communities, providing spiritual support as well as social and community activities.
The Bolton Breakthrough Church operates regular Sunday and midweek worship services, reflecting the vibrant and structured nature of Pentecostal church life. The signage also highlights the church's urban setting, positioned within a mixed-use town-centre environment behind metal railings and adjacent to modern commercial buildings.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering religion in Britain, Pentecostal Christianity, African diaspora communities, urban churches, faith-based organisations, and contemporary religious life in UK towns and cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGHP - The 6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, was a Territorial Force (TF) unit of the British Army. Formed in 1908 from Volunteer units recruited in Cheshire since 1859, it was one of the first TF units to go to the Western Front in World War I. It had a wandering existence, moving frequently from one command to another, seeing a considerable amount of combat at the Somme, Ypres, during the German Spring Offensive and in the final Allied Hundred Days Offensive. After the war it was amalgamated into a local artillery regiment.
An invasion scare in 1859 led to the emergence of the Volunteer Movement, and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVCs) began to be organised throughout Great Britain to supplement the Regular Army and Militia. A large number of small RVCs were formed in Cheshire and formed into five administrative battalions. The 4th Administrative Battalion, based at Stockport, comprised the following units:
9th (Mottram) Cheshire RVC, raised at Mottram in Longendale 10 February 1860 under Captain Alfred K. Sidebottom, disbanded February 1861
13th (Dukinfield) Cheshire RVC, 20 February 1860 under Capt Francis Dukinfield Palmer Astley, was raised by the Astley family who owned the coalmines at Dukinfield, and known unofficially as the 'Astley Rifles'
a 2nd Company was formed on 15 November 1860 and a 3rd in March 1869
headquarters moved to Newton Moor, near Hyde, in 1863, then to Stalybridge in 1873
17th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 20 August 1860 under Capt Henry Coppock
18th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 12 March 1860 under Capt John Thomas Emmerson
19th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 15 March 1860 under Capt Samuel W. Wilkinson
20th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 20 March 1860 under Capt Thomas H. Sykes
21st (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 22 March 1860 under Capt Cephas John Howard
29th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 10 April 1860 under Capt John M. Lingard, formerly of the 1st Royal Cheshire Militia
31st (Hyde) Cheshire RVC, 15 August 1860 under Capt Thomas Mott

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XMXM - Deanston distillery is a Single Malt Scotch whisky distillery located on the banks of the River Teith, eight miles from the historic town of Stirling, at the gateway to the dramatic Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. It is the largest distillery owned by Scotch whisky producer Distell Group Limited, who also own Bunnahabhain Distillery on the Isle of Islay and Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull.
Deanston Distillery started life in 1785 as a cotton mill designed by Sir Richard Arkwright, and remained as such for 180 years until it was transformed into a distillery in 1966. The constant supply of pure water from the River Teith contributed to the decision to turn the mill into a distillery and Deanston is now the only distillery in Scotland to be self-sufficient in electricity, with power generated by an on-site hydro-energy facility. Deanston sits in the Highland single malt region of Scotland and produces whisky which is handmade by ten local craftsmen, un-chill filtered, natural colour and bottled at a strength of 46.3% ABV.
In 1841 James Smith retired from the mill. Operations continued but by 1848, production at Deanston was in decline. The turn of the twentieth century saw a further decrease in demand for cotton and the workforce was scaled down from 1500 to 500 people. Things steadily got worse until the mill was closed on 2 April 1965.
It was the collective efforts of James Finlay & Co, Brodie Hepburn & Co, and A.B (Sandy) Grant, known together as Deanston Distillers Ltd, who converted Deanston Mill into a malt whisky distillery in 1965. The soft, fast flow of the River Teith and a whisky boom in Scotland at the time made the site ideal for whisky production. The distillery was opened on 17 October 1966 after an extensive refurbishment costing ?300,000, employing 20 local people, but taking just nine months.Three floors were removed to make room for four copper stills and a mash tun. The constant, cool temperature of the weaving shed made it ideal

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYMN - Since the onset of the Troubles in 1971, Nationalist and Loyalist communities throughout Northern Ireland have been divided by Peace Walls. These large stone and steel constructions were designed to protect neighbourhoods from sporadic attacks and retain a sense of peace and protection.
Of the city's 17 walls, West Belfast's sections are the most visited. Once in the area it's easy to determine which side of the divide you're on: red, white and blue kerbstones, Loyalist murals and Union Jacks indicate you're on the Shankill. If the kerbs are green, white and gold, the flag is Irish and the murals are Republican, you're on the Falls.
You can cross from one side to the other via access roads at Lanark Way and Northumberland Street. These roads close in times of heightened tension, which may well be the case during the marching season (see The Twelfth). GoTonySmith

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNMH - This image shows a memorial plaque mounted on a historic water trough in Martock, Somerset (TA12 6JL). The inscription reads: Water trough given in memory of the 450,000 horses killed in the South African War 1899?1902, commemorating the enormous loss of animal life during the conflict more commonly known as the Boer War.
During the South African War, horses were essential to the British Army for cavalry, artillery hauling, and transport across difficult terrain. Poor conditions, disease, exhaustion, and limited veterinary care led to exceptionally high mortality rates. Memorials such as this water trough were erected across Britain in the early 20th century as practical yet symbolic tributes, combining public utility with remembrance.
The trough reflects a wider tradition of functional war memorials, often placed in village centres to serve both people and working animals at a time when horses remained vital to everyday life. The engraved metal plaque set into stone conveys solemn remembrance while highlighting a lesser-acknowledged aspect of military history: the role and sacrifice of animals in warfare.
Today, the Martock water trough stands as an important piece of local heritage, linking the village to imperial history, early 20th-century memorial culture, and changing attitudes towards animal welfare. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to war memorials, British military history, the Boer War, animal history, remembrance culture, and Somerset local history.

'Black Magic Woman' is a song written by Peter Green that first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single in various countries in 1968, subsequently appearing on the 1969 Fleetwood Mac compilation albums English Rose (US) and The Pious Bird of Good Omen (UK).
In 1970, it became a classic hit by Santana, as sung by Gregg Rolie, reaching no 4 in the U.S. and Canadian charts, after appearing on their Abraxas album, becoming more closely associated with Santana than Fleetwood Mac.
Santana is a band based around guitarist Carlos Santana and founded in the late 1960s. It first came to public attention after their performing the song 'Soul Sacrifice' at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, when their Latin rock provided a contrast to other acts on the bill. This initial exposure made their first, eponymous album a hit at the time, followed in the next two years by successful follow-ups Abraxas and Santana III.
Over the next few years, lineup changes were common and frequent, and although retaining a basis of Latin rock, Carlos Santana's increasing involvement with guru Sri Chinmoy took the band further into more esoteric music, which continued for many years, although never quite losing the initial Latin influence.
In 1998, the group was inducted into the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame, with Carlos Santana, Jose Chepito Areas, David Brown, Mike Carabello, Gregg Rolie and Michael Shrieve being honored.
Santana has achieved a total of eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards which were all awarded in 2000. Carlos also won two Grammy Awards as a solo artist in 1989 and 2003.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4772241526 - 'While editing this image of TonyD taken in Warrington I was listening to an ipod playlist of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes tracks from the blaxploitation years of the 70's.
Hayes was singer-songwriter, actor, and musician and one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records. There he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s.
In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He was also the Stax label's premier artist. In addition to his work in pop music, Hayes was a film score composer for motion pictures. His best known work, for the 1971 soul cinema classic film Shaft, earned Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song (the first Academy Award received by an African-American in a non-acting category) and two Grammy Awards. He received a third Grammy for the album Black Moses.
Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, 'Freddie's Dead' and the title track. Pusherman is the third killer track on the disk. Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.
In 1997, Rhino Records released a 25th Anniversary collection of the Super Fly album with a bonus disc of demo versions of songs, radio spots and interviews.
Isaac Hayes died of a stroke in August 2008, aged nearly 66.
He will probably be best remembered when during the late 1990s, Hayes gained new popularity as the voice of Chef animated TV series South Park. Chef was a soul-singing cafeteria worker at the South Park kids' school. A song from the series performed by Chef, 'Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. I Love You)', received international radio airplay in 1999. It reached number-one on the UK singles chart. The track also appeared on the album Chef Aid: The South Park Album in 1998.
He left the show however in a row about the South Park episode 'Trapped in the Closet'. This was a satire of Scientology which aired in Nov 2005. In a response the South Park authors stated
'He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.'
The South Park season 10 premiere (aired March 22, 2006) featured 'The Return of Chef', a thinly veiled telling of the affair from Parker and Stone's point of view. Using sound clips from past episodes, it depicts Chef as having been brainwashed and urges viewers (via Kyle talking to the town) to 'remember Chef as the jolly old guy who always broke into song' and not to blame Chef for his defection, but rather, as Kyle stated, 'be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains.'
During the spring of 2008 before his death, Hayes shot scenes for a comedy about soul musicians inspired by the history of Stax Records entitled Soul Men, in which he appears as himself in a supporting role. His voice can be heard in the film in a voice-over role as Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, and Sharon Leal's characters are traveling through Memphis.
Two months after his death, the South Park episode 'The China Probrem' was dedicated to him.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHW0 - Tobermory distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery situated on the Hebridean island of Mull, Scotland in the town of Tobermory. The distillery, which was formerly known as Ledaig, was founded in 1798 and has changed hands several times, having undergone a number of periods of closure. The only distillery on Mull, it is currently owned by Burn Stewart Distillers, a subsidiary of Distell Group Limited of South Africa. Its main product, Tobermory single malt, is used in the blends Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, which remains known under the former name, Ledaig.
The Tobermory Single Malt is distilled from unpeated malted barley and matured in oak casks for at least ten years. A heavily peated whisky is also produced, but in small quantities, named Ledaig after the original distillery name. The malts are used in a number of blends including Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The water for the distillery comes from a private loch near to the Mishnish lochs. The branding had been confused under previous owners, with the Tobermory brand being used for both a single malt and a blended whisky.
Production was upgraded in 1990, with the distillery becoming capable of producing a million litres of spirit a year. It uses a traditional copper?domed cast iron mash tun, four washbacks made of Oregon pine, and four spirit stills. The whisky is matured in both former bourbon whiskey and sherry casks. Maturation takes place at the distillery at Deanston.

Usually containing only strong tobacco, the traditional waterpipe has many names in the near east: Hukkah, shisha, nargeeleh, nargile, nargilen or argeelah.
The pipe appears to have originated in India. Initially in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar (around 1542 ). Following the European introduction of tobacco to India, Hakim Abul Fateh Gilani a descendant of Abdul Qadir Al-Gilani came from Baghdad to India who was later a physician in the court of Mughal raised concerns after smoking tobacco became popular among Indian noblemen, and subsequently envisaged a system which allowed smoke to be passed through water in order to be 'purified'.
This new pipe for smoking soon became a status symbol for the Indian aristocracy and gentry. These days the Hookah west of Cyprus and east of Thailand is ubiquitous.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3812467275 - 'A counciller at work in meeting room at Warrington Peace Centre, Cheshire UK.
On 20 March 1993, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) detonated two bombs in Warrington town centre. The blasts killed two children: three year old Jonathan Ball died instantly, and twelve year old Tim Parry died five days later in hospital. Around 56 other people were injured - 4 seriously. Their deaths provoked widespread condemnation of the organisation responsible. The blast followed a failed bomb attack a few weeks earlier on a gas storage plant in Warrington.
Tim Parry's father Colin Parry founded The Peace Centre (formerly the Tim Parry Jonathan Ball Peace Centre) as part of a campaign to reconcile communities in conflict. The centre opened on the seventh anniversary of the bombing in 2000.
He and his family still live in Warrington.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPH6JD - John Blanke was a royal trumpeter in the courts of Henry VII and Henry VIII, and remains the only black Tudor for whom we have an identifiable image. While serving two kings, he bore witness to some of the great moments in England's history and contributed to some of the greatest spectacles of the Tudor age.
We know nothing of the early life of John Blanke. In fact, John Blanke may not have been his name at birth. Blanke may have been a play on the words blanc (French) or blanco (Spanish), meaning white.
We know from manuscript evidence that John Blanke was described as black, and the two surviving images of him, painted around 1511, show that he had dark skin.
The earliest named reference to John Blanke was a payment made by Henry VII in December 1507, when he was one of eight royal trumpeters under the leadership of Peter de Casa Nova. This entry shows he was paid 20 shillings, at 8d. (old pence) each day, for his service in November.
John Blanke may have arrived in England in the entourage of Katherine of Aragon in 1501, who was to marry Prince Arthur, eldest son and heir of Henry VII. Katherine's entourage included a group of trumpeters and Henry VII rewarded the '9 trumpets of Spain' shortly after her arrival.
It is likely that Catalina of Motril, a Muslim Moor and one of Katherine's servants of the bedchamber, was also part of that contingent.
