Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRA - Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 ? 18 May 1980) was an English singer, songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist of the band Joy Division, with whom he released the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
Curtis had severe epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour, shortly before the release of Closer
On the evening of 17 May 1980, Curtis asked Deborah to drop her impending divorce proceedings
she replied that it was likely that he would have changed his mind by the following morning and then ? mindful of his previous suicide attempt and also concerned that his state of anxiety and frustration might drive Curtis into an epileptic seizure ? offered to spend the night in his company. Deborah then drove to her parents' home to inform them of her intentions. When she returned to the couple's home at 77 Barton Street in Macclesfield, his demeanour had changed and he informed his wife of his intentions to spend the night alone, first making her promise not to return to the house before he had taken his scheduled 10 a.m. train to Manchester to meet his bandmates.
In the early hours of the next morning, Curtis took his own life. He was 23 years old. He had used the kitchen's washing line to hang himself after having written a note to Deborah in which he declared his love for her despite his recent affair with Honor??. Deborah found his body soon after. In her 1995 biography, Touching from a Distance, Deborah recalls finding her husband's body and initially thinking that he was still alive before noticing the rope around his neck. According to Tony Wilson, Curtis spent the few hours before his suicide watching Werner Herzog's 1977 film Stroszek and listening to Iggy Pop's 1977 album The Idiot. Stark notes the significance of this album, as Pop's title was inspired by Dostoyevsky's novel The Idiot about the spiritually sensitive epileptic prince who was driven mad

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX7N - This image shows the distinctive papier mache head of Frank Sidebottom, the surreal comic creation of Chris Sievey. The oversized head, with exaggerated blue eyes, dark hair, and fixed expression, became one of the most recognisable visual symbols of British alternative comedy from the 1980s onwards.
Chris Sievey, who grew up in Timperley, Greater Manchester, developed Frank Sidebottom as a deliberately low-tech, DIY character, combining absurd humour, satire, and music. The handmade nature of the head, typically constructed from papier mache and cardboard, was central to the character's identity and reflected a wider punk and post-punk ethos of self-production and creative independence in Manchester's cultural scene.
Frank Sidebottom appeared across television, radio, music performances, and live comedy, often delivering deadpan observations and surreal commentary on everyday British life. Despite the deliberately crude construction, the character achieved cult status, becoming closely associated with Manchester's alternative cultural output alongside music, art, and experimental comedy.
Photographed here in an indoor archive or exhibition setting, with printed artwork and books visible in the background, the image functions both as a documentary record and as a piece of cultural history. It highlights the enduring legacy of Frank Sidebottom as a symbol of British eccentricity, northern humour, and the creative spirit that emerged from Greater Manchester during the late twentieth century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX84 - This image shows an original hand drawn and photocopied poster from 1988 advertising an appearance by Frank Sidebottom, the surreal comic creation of Chris Sievey. The poster announces that Frank Sidebottom would cut the ribbon for the official opening of the Timperley Aquatics water garden on 2 April 1988, at 10.30am GMT, with a live appearance lasting five minutes.
The artwork features Frank Sidebottom's instantly recognisable wide eyed papier mache head, rendered in a deliberately na??ve black and white illustration style. Surrounding text and drawings, including fish motifs and playful handwritten lettering, reflect the DIY, low budget aesthetic that defined Sievey's work and the wider British alternative comedy scene of the 1980s.
The poster references Radio Timperley and includes local contact details, reinforcing the strong connection between Frank Sidebottom and community level events in south Manchester. Rather than mainstream venues, Sievey frequently performed at small local openings, shops, and civic events, using absurdity and deadpan humour to parody celebrity culture and public ceremonies.
As a piece of ephemera, the poster offers a valuable snapshot of grassroots British cultural history. It illustrates how alternative comedy, outsider art, and local radio intersected in late twentieth century Manchester, and why Frank Sidebottom became a lasting cult figure associated with Timperley, Greater Manchester, and northern English eccentricity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG2C - Interior signage advertising nail bar and beauty services inside Jenners department store on Princes Street in Edinburgh, Scotland. The display promotes manicure and beauty treatments associated with the store's Regis Spa offering and is set against the distinctive interior finishes of one of Scotland's most famous retail landmarks.
Jenners, founded in 1838, has long been regarded as Edinburgh's premier department store and a key feature of Princes Street, the city's principal shopping thoroughfare. Often referred to historically as the Harrods of the North, the store has played a central role in Edinburgh's retail and social life for generations.
Beauty services such as nail bars and spas reflect the evolution of traditional department stores, adapting to changing consumer habits by combining retail with experiential services. The image captures this blend of historic retail heritage and contemporary beauty culture within a city-centre shopping environment.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use illustrating department store interiors, beauty and wellness retail, Edinburgh shopping, changing high street models, luxury retail environments, and the modernisation of historic retail institutions in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC31A0 - This photograph shows a large painted mural on Bold Street in Warrington, Cheshire, carrying the message As a team we can do so much more. We are stronger together. The artwork combines bold illustrated imagery, including a stylised bird and red wings set against a green woodland background, with a clear statement promoting unity, cooperation, and collective strength.
Murals such as this have become an increasingly visible part of urban regeneration and placemaking in UK town centres, using public art to reinforce positive social values and local identity. The wording emphasises teamwork and solidarity, themes that resonate strongly within community-focused environments and periods of social or economic challenge.
Positioned along a prominent street frontage, the mural transforms an otherwise plain exterior wall into a visual statement that engages passers-by and contributes to the character of the area. The bright colours and accessible message make the artwork legible from a distance while encouraging reflection on shared responsibility and mutual support.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents contemporary British street art as both creative expression and civic messaging. It is well suited for editorial use covering community engagement, urban regeneration, public art, and the role of murals in shaping modern town centre environments in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9GK - The Amstrad CPC (short for Colour Personal Computer) is a series of 8-bit home computers produced by Amstrad between 1984 and 1990. It was designed to compete in the mid-1980s home computer market dominated by the Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum, where it successfully established itself primarily in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and the German-speaking parts of Europe.
The series spawned a total of six distinct models: The CPC464, CPC664, and CPC6128 were highly successful competitors in the European home computer market. The later 464plus and 6128plus, intended to prolong the system's lifecycle with hardware updates, were considerably less successful, as was the attempt to repackage the plus hardware into a game console as the GX4000.
The CPC models' hardware is based on the Zilog Z80A CPU, complemented with either 64 or 128 KB of RAM. Their computer-in-a-keyboard design prominently features an integrated storage device, either a compact cassette deck or 3-inch floppy disk drive. The main units were only sold bundled with either a colour, green-screen or monochrome monitor that doubles as the main unit's power supply. Additionally, a wide range of first and third-party hardware extensions such as external disk drives, printers, and memory extensions, was available.
The CPC series was pitched against other home computers primarily used to play video games and enjoyed a strong supply of game software. The comparatively low price for a complete computer system with dedicated monitor, its high-resolution monochrome text and graphic capabilities and the possibility to run CP/M software also rendered the system attractive for business users, which was reflected by a wide selection of application software.
During its lifetime, the CPC series sold approximately three million units

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPEC - This image shows an entrance to the Golden Square Shopping Centre in Warrington as it appeared in 1984, featuring bright colours and design elements characteristic of late twentieth-century retail architecture. The bold palette and decorative styling reflect a period when shopping centres were positioned as modern, lively civic spaces intended to revitalise town centres and encourage consumer footfall.
Golden Square Shopping Centre has long been a central feature of Warrington's retail landscape, connecting key pedestrian routes and housing a mix of national chains and local businesses. During the 1980s, centres such as this represented a shift in British shopping habits, moving towards covered malls and integrated retail environments designed around convenience and visual impact.
The colourful entrance illustrates broader trends in 1980s commercial design, where strong colours and graphic elements were used to create identity and appeal. Today, such imagery provides valuable documentary insight into changing approaches to town-centre retail and the visual language of consumer spaces in late twentieth-century Britain.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering UK retail history, shopping centre development, 1980s architecture and design, and the evolution of town-centre commercial spaces.

No operational reasons to keep the building in council use or occupied beyond this point, allowing the site to be cleared for redevelopment.
Justifying the demolition, Warrington said the building has poor energy efficiency, high service costs, and is inflexible for modern office and business working
Cost estimates for refurbishment, M&E installation, and energy efficiency measures to keep the building in office use stand at ?5m
even if this is actioned, the building would still have limitations for flexible modern working practices and energy efficiency.
The council had explored renting the building out but said: there was no demand for office space of this scale and quality
a sale was also considered but the council found market demand was not significant.
Residential is the most likely outcome for the site, and it will be built into a masterplan for an area including Scotland Road, Town Hill, and Cockhedge. The council said it would look to sell the site in future.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4K85B - Until 1992, upon leaving either Manchester Piccadilly or Victoria stations you'd be met by this - a line of little 'Centreline' buses waiting to take passengers from one station to the other across the city centre via the shopping and office districts.
Manchester was the site of the first passenger railway in the world - the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1830. But the haphazard way railways were planned and competed in the Victoria age meant that there was little coordination and there were three separate major stations in the city with no effective links between north and south. London Road (later Piccadilly) served the south, while Victoria served the north. The third, Central, closed in 1969 and for a while became a semi-derelict car park before its wonderful transformation into an exhibition centre.
So to connect the two stations, SELNEC and ten GMT ran a 'Centreline' service running at frequent intervals, with a flat fare to speed boarding. Some of the route was in narrow streets so these little Seddon 'Midi' buses were bought, built in Oldham. They were perfect for the job operationally but they were not popular with their drivers or the garage staff as they were difficult to maintain, noisy inside and with most of their weight at the front they could skid in wet or icy weather. But they did their job day in, day out for many years, buzzing around the city streets and usually full.
The Seddon's lasted twelve years, a very good age for lightly-built buses, until replaced by new Dennis buses in 1986. Then in 1992 Metrolink at last provide a rail-borne link across the city centre between the two main stations. The raison d'etre for Centreline was gone and the service ended.
Most of the Seddon's were scrapped but one or two still exist including number 1722, which is fully restored and on display at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4K85W - Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive was the public body responsible for public transport in Greater Manchester between 1974 and 2011, when it became part of Transport for Greater Manchester.
Until 1969, the conurbation surrounding Manchester was divided between the two administrative counties of Lancashire and Cheshire and a number of county boroughs, such as Manchester, Salford, Stockport or Bolton. To comply with the Transport Act 1968, on 1 April 1969 the SELNEC Passenger Transport Executive was formed. SELNEC stood for South East Lancashire North East Cheshire, a joint authority of the various local councils
When the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester was created on 1 April 1974 the executive was replaced by GMPTE, with the county council replacing the joint transport authority. The public branding applied to buses and signage used the shorter name Greater Manchester Transport, displayed in upper and lower case Helvetica next to a distinctive orange double 'M' logo. The logo, first seen around 1974, is still in use today on bus stops and transport information literature, but is being gradually replaced on the former across Greater Manchester by rebranded bus stop flags displaying the new Transport for Greater Manchester logo.
To add to printed material and logos etched in glass on the side of bus shelters, GMPTE began a programme of adding their 'double M' logo to 101 railway station nameboards, train rolling stock livery, bus sides and some 'totem' pole signs outside rail stations in the area during the 1990s. This idea was later extended to a full re-design of the bus stop flag in 2000, (used first on primary bus routes, now extended to the entire GMPTE area) resulting in a unified corporate appearance containing the 'double M' logo on bus, train and tram stops.
The PTE also acquired the bus operations of Wigan Corporation with 130 vehicles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTK75E - The council said there were:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYYR7P - Wham! (briefly known in the US as Wham! U.K.) were an English pop duo formed in Bushey in 1981. The duo consisted of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. They became one of the most commercially successful pop acts of the 1980s, selling more than 30 million certified records worldwide from 1982 to 1986.
Influenced by funk and soul music and presenting themselves as disaffected youth, Wham!'s 1983 debut album Fantastic addressed the United Kingdom's unemployment problem and teen angst over adulthood. Their second studio album Make It Big in 1984 was a worldwide pop smash hit, charting at number one in both the UK and the United States. Associated with the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US, the singles from the album?Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Everything She Wants and Careless Whisper?all topped the US Billboard Hot 100. In 1985, Wham! made a highly publicised 10-day visit to China, the first by a Western pop group. The event was seen as a major watershed moment in increasing friendly bilateral relations between China and the West.
In 1986, Wham! broke up. Michael was keen to create music targeted at a more sophisticated adult market rather than the duo's primarily teenage audience. Before going their separate ways, a farewell single The Edge of Heaven, and a greatest-hits album titled The Final would be forthcoming, along with a farewell concert entitled The Final.

Mark's mosaic masterpieces of city icons like music impressario Tony Wilson, footballer George Best and Smiths frontman Morrissey became a much-loved city landmark hung on the exterior of Afflecks ? but when the site was taken over by developer Bruntwood in 2008 they were kept by the previous manager.
But now Mark tells The Diary he has been commissioned to create a raft of new mosaics that will once again decorate the arches of the old building that corners a huge site off Oldham Street, Tib Street and Dale Street in the Northern Quarter.
He says: I suppose my artwork is Afflecks, that's what I do, it's what I'm known for. It has been my gallery for the past 12 years or so, so obviously I'm happy to be asked back.
The first, that depicts the famous On The Sixth Day God Created Man...Chester quote, will return this week on the Afflecks Arcade.
And Mark, pictured here in his studio, is now hard at work on the second, an image of labrador Bruce, who the Black Dog Ballroom bar in the basement of Afflecks is named after.
Mark then has plans to create new mosaics of Manc icons, including a special Factory Records piece, to commemorate the label's late, great Tony Wilson, New Order manager Rob Gretton and legendary music producer Martin Hannett, among others

Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 ? 18 May 1980) was an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division and recorded two albums with the group: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980). Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style and songwriting typically filled with imagery of desolation, emptiness and alienation.
Curtis suffered from epilepsy and depression and took his own life on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour and shortly before the release of Closer. His death led to the band's dissolution and the subsequent formation of New Order.
Despite their short career, Joy Division have exerted a wide-reaching influence. John Bush of AllMusic argues that they became the first band in the post-punk movement by ... emphasizing not anger and energy but mood and expression, pointing ahead to the rise of melancholy alternative music in the '80s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BH9J8T - The Right to Buy scheme is a policy in the United Kingdom (with the exception of Scotland since 1 August 2016 and Wales from 26 Jan 2019) which gives secure tenants of councils and some housing associations the legal right to buy, at a large discount, the council house they are living in. There is also a Right to Acquire for assured tenants of housing association dwellings built with public subsidy after 1997, at a smaller discount. By 1997 over 1,700,000 dwellings in the UK had been sold under the scheme since its introduction in 1980, with the scheme being cited as one of the major factors in the drastic reduction in the amount of social housing in the UK, which has fallen from nearly 6.5 million units in 1979 to roughly 2 million units in 2017, while also being credited as the main driver of the 15% rise in home ownership, which rose from 55% of householders in 1979 to a peak of 71% in 2003 (this figure has declined since the late 2000s to 63% in 2017 [this figure excludes Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland]).
Supporters claim that the programme has given millions of households a tangible asset, secured their families' finances and?by releasing cash to repay local authority debt?helped improve the public finances. Critics claim that the policy compounded a housing shortage for people of low income, initiated a national house price bubble, and led ultimately to what is commonly recognised as the displacement and gentrification of traditional communities
The Right to Buy scheme has been criticised for the following reasons: Speculating investors were able to buy up council properties through deferred transaction agreements, hastening the rise in property costs
Commercially and socially valuable council assets was sold at below their market value or replacement cost, which was an imprudent waste of public money
The remaining stock of council housing was concentrated in undesirable areas with little employment opportunity, further isolating and stigmatising.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGRG - Stockport is a large, major town in Greater Manchester, England, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Manchester city centre, where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey, and the largest in the metropolitan borough of the same name.
Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. However, Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries. Stockport was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry, which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year
the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997.
Dominating the western approaches to the town is the Stockport Viaduct. Built in 1840, the viaduct's 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey. This structure featured as the background in many paintings by L. S. Lowry.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6XT - Trump Tower is a 58-floor, 664-foot-tall (202 m) mixed-use skyscraper at 721?725 Fifth Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City,USA,between East 56th and 57th Streets. It serves as the headquarters for the Trump Organization. Additionally, it houses the penthouse condominium residence of businessman, real estate developer, and former U.S. president Donald Trump, who developed the building and named it after himself. Several members of the Trump family also live, or have resided, in the building. The tower stands on a plot where the flagship store of department-store chain Bonwit Teller was formerly located.
Der Scutt of Poor, Swanke, Hayden & Connell designed Trump Tower, and Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company (now the AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company) developed it. Although it is in one of Midtown Manhattan's special zoning districts, the tower was approved because it was to be built as a mixed-use development. Trump was permitted to add more stories to the tower in return for additional retail space and for providing privately owned public space on the ground floor, the lower level, and two outdoor terraces. There were controversies during construction, including the destruction of historically important sculptures from the Bonwit Teller store
Trump's alleged underpaying of contractors
and a lawsuit that Trump filed because the tower was not tax-exempt.
Construction on the building began in 1979. The atrium, apartments, offices, and stores opened on a staggered schedule from February to November 1983. At first, there were few tenants willing to move into the commercial and retail spaces
the residential units were sold out within months of opening. After Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent election, the tower saw large increases in visitation, though security concerns required the area around the tower to be patrolled for several years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P9FFMA - A microfilm reader is a device used in projecting and magnifying images stored in microform to readable proportions. Microform includes flat film, microfilm, aperture cards, microfiche, and ultra fiche. Using open reels or cassettes, microfilm is often used as a way to store many documents in a small space. It has become increasingly prevalent in the development of films, as well as storage of archived newspapers. With the invention of microfilm, microfilm readers soon developed. With the increasing popularity of computers, microform has decreased in use. However, many library archives still remain in microform.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWT25 - SHANKILL PROTESTANT BOYS FLUTE BAND
The Shankill Protestant Boys Flute Band?or as they are more famously known now?The SPB?were formed in the Shankill area in 1980. The reasons for forming the band were much more than simply establishing another flute band?the Shankill had many at that time. The men behind the formation had other ideas. They wanted to promote and express their Protestant culture and also remember the brave Volunteers and Servicemen who had fought and died during two World Wars?in particular during the Somme offensive?and to remember those in more recent times who perished during the conflict in the war against violent Republicanism.
Sadly many of those who served the band since their beginnings 33 years ago are no longer with us?either passed away or in many instances murdered. However of the original founders around ten remain. Some, remarkably are still marching while others retain honorary membership. Gary Lenaghan? The Hunters?Harold Reynolds-The Young's?The Freel's?John McQuade?Derek Mawhinney? The Finlay's were all there at the start and remain heavily involved today.
The SPB were the first flute band to receive and carry the colours of the 1st Battalion of the Ulster Volunteer Force?in 1982?and to this day carry those colours with pride and dignity. It is a commonly known fact that these colours are carried on ALL occasions?at no time are they excluded?and in the past this has caused some difficulties?with both the Police and indeed with certain sections of the Loyal Orders. At one stage during the Eighties the band came into conflict with the Scottish Orange Institution which forced the band off the road because of their refusal to parade without their beloved colours. Since then the SPB have not walked in Scotland with the Orange.
Around the same time and with the concept of the Supergrass system being implemented the band became heavily involved with Families For Legal Rights. For ma

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9E69 - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.
Variants include the ascot tie, bow tie, bolo tie, zipper tie, cravat and clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear.
Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be bested by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979, a record that stood for 23 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG386Y - An ice cream van (British) or ice cream truck (American) is a commercial vehicle which serves as a traveling retail outlet for ice cream, usually during the summer. Ice cream vans are often seen parked at public events, or near parks, beaches, or other areas where people congregate. Ice cream vans often travel near where children play ? outside schools, in residential areas, or in other locations. They usually stop briefly before moving on to the next street.
Ice cream vans are often brightly decorated and carry images of ice cream, or some other adornment, such as cartoon characters. They may have painted-on notices, which can serve a commercial purpose (Stop me and buy one!) or a more serious one (Don't Skid on a Kid!) - serving as a warning to passing motorists that children may run out into the road at the sight of the van, or appear without warning from behind it. Along the sides, a large sliding window acts as a serving hatch, and this is often covered with small pictures of the available products, with their associated prices.
A distinctive feature of ice cream vans is their melodic chimes, and often these take the form of a famous and recognizable tune, usually The Mister Softee Jingle, Turkey in the Straw, Do Your Ears Hang Low?, Pop Goes The Weasel The Entertainer, Music Box Dancer, Home on the Range, It's a Small World, Super Mario Bros. Theme or Camptown Races
or, in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Greensleeves, Whistle While You Work in Crewe and Nantwich, You Are My Sunshine in Vale Royal, Teddy Bears' Picnic in Sheffield, and Match of the Day in other places.
In some places in the US, ice cream trucks play the song Ice Cream by Andre Nickatina (essentially just Turkey in the Straw with bass).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEF7J - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4234549401 - 'I was listening to this on my iPod yesterday and thought how apt it was given the strange wintery weather we have had of late. Check it out here.
The image I took from my ipod (like the MP3 sound I was getting) was no match for the real thing, a genuine 12' 45rpm single of the B5.
I saw them live in 1980 and they were more memorable than the headline band they supported.
Of course they were produced by the great but mis-guided Martin Hannet, who no doubt helped them achieve their unique Reggae-Punk sound.
I would recommend any music fan to checkout 'Who Killed Martin Hannett?: The Story of Factory Records' Musical Magician' or the excellent CD 'Zero: A Martin Hannett Story 1979-1991'
However do avoid 'In the Studio With Martin Hannett' - you will be dissapointed, sorely.
He was a big user of narcotics and drink, and this was to eventually hasten his death at the age of 41. Just before he died he had ballooned to 26 stone (364 pounds) and his coffin could not fit in the ground.
He was the total musical pioneer, always searching to create his own unique sound.
Of many 'Martin Hannett' Stories, one favourite is about when he once fell asleep over the mixing desk, his gigantic belly spreading and pushing the faders across the board, so that the sound went berserk -- the band stopped playing, and woke him up telling him that the levels were all over the place. 'Bollocks,' he replied, 'that's the best you've sounded all f---ing day.'
Interesting too that producer on this cut is Chris Nagle, also later involved with Clayton lads Gabrielle\u2019s Wish and Jane Weaver's Kill Laura - www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3809868192/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP0K7J - Peter Hook helped unveil a new mural of Joy Division bandmate Ian Curtis in Macclesfield town centre this afternoon (March 26).
The bassist and co-founder of New Order cut the ribbon alongside Akse, the Manchester-based street artist who painted the mural, telling those in attendance: I am actually very honoured to be here, and to do this, because to me it's about time Ian came home.
The mural, funded by Cheshire East Council, is based on an original photograph taken by Kevin Cummins at The Factory/Russell Club in Hulme, Manchester on 13 July 1979. It adorns a building on Mill Street opposite Macclesfield bus station.
Ahead of the unveiling, Hook said earlier in the week: I'm watching all the people going down the street and every single one of them is drawn to it.
Some young kids walking down had no idea who he was but now they do. Hopefully they'll listen to the music and get the gist of what we were trying to do as kids.
He said it was an honour to paint the portrait of Curtis and hoped local people were excited about it.
Aske said,Although I've been working on murals most of my life, it's still always an incredible feeling to get to the end of the journey ? well the end of my journey at least, Akse said. Now it's time for the people of Macclesfield to enjoy the mural, as I know how much Ian meant to so many of them.
Councillor Nick Mannion, chair of the authority's economy and growth committee, said: Before today, I spoke about how perhaps this beautiful mural has been somewhat overdue but now that I'm here seeing it for myself for the first time, I can say without any doubt that it has truly been worth the wait.
I am a huge fan of Joy Division ? the cultural significance of the band and Ian stretches well beyond my home town of Macclesfield. This is such a proud moment, I'm feeling very emotional about it right now.
Curtis, who was brought up in the town and is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery, was the lead singer of Joy Division

Snickers bars to be called Marathon again after nearly 30 years
Retro confectionery on sale for next three months in Morrisons.
Chocolate nostalgia fans are in for a treat after it was announced that the much-loved Snickers bars will be sold under their former name, Marathon, for a limited time.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Snickers was sold under the brand name Marathon until July 19, 1990.
England had recently lost on penalties to West Germany at the World Cup in Italy, Elton John was at No 1 with one of his lesser known hits, Sacrifice, and Marathon's name changed to what it was branded everywhere else in the world.
But limited edition retro Marathon bars are now on sale in Morrisons supermarkets, where they will be available for the next three months.
Mars brand director Gemma Buggins told the Mail on Sunday: Bringing the Marathon bar branding back for a limited time really was a no-brainer.
It's a great way to celebrate more than 85 years of Mars making chocolate in the UK and we hope this serves as a wonderful treat for fans of Snickers who remember when it was called Marathon.
Snickers is Britain's second favourite chocolate bar, after Cadbury's Dairy Milk, and has global sales of ?1.6 billion a year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4E6 - While a cultural revolution was underway in '60s society, a color revolution was taking place in UK and American bathrooms. Avocado green and other colors were all the rage beginning in the late '60s and lasting through the late '70s for bathroom tubs, sinks and toilets. Over the years, avocado bathroom suites went out of style, but not all of them went away. If your home has a bathroom with avocado fixtures, you have several options for giving it an update.
Retro Avocado Bathroom Suites
If you inherited a bathroom with avocado green fixtures from your home's previous owners, try taking an if-you-can't-beat-them-join-them approach. Embrace your bathroom's retro vibe and decorate it 1970s style. Paint the walls pale green and choose mod-print fabrics for the shower curtain and window treatments. You want the end result to look retro and cool, not dated and dingy, so choose accessories that are authentic, but in good condition.
Search secondhand stores for wall art, vanity mirrors and other period pieces and give them a good cleaning before putting them on display. To complete the look, cover the floor with a fluffy green rug and illuminate the vanity with vintage sconces or pendant lamps.
