Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENGK9 - Entrance to the Co-operative Insurance Society Limited building on Miller Street in Manchester, showing the corporate lettering, glass doors, metal frontage and clean 1960s modernist styling of the former CIS headquarters. The wider CIS Building, also known as CIS Tower, was constructed between 1959 and 1962 for the Co-operative Insurance Society, to designs by George S Hay, chief architect of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, with Gordon Tait of Sir John Burnet, Tait and Partners. Historic England lists the building at Grade II and records that it was designed to consolidate around 2,500 CIS staff who had previously been spread across several Manchester offices. Completed in 1962, the tower became a major post-war Manchester landmark and was, at the time, the tallest office block in the country, symbolising the confidence, scale and social ambition of the co-operative movement in the city. This street-level detail has strong editorial and commercial search value for Manchester architecture, CIS Tower, Co-operative Insurance, Co-op history, insurance headquarters, Miller Street, NOMA, post-war modernism, International Style office design, listed buildings, commercial heritage, 1960s signage, glass entrance doors, corporate lettering, office regeneration, urban conservation and the changing use of large city centre headquarters. The image can illustrate stories about the Co-operative Group, financial services, Manchester business history, architectural preservation, empty offices, redevelopment proposals, twentieth century heritage, modernist walking tours, planning policy, workplace history and northern civic identity. With no people visible, the photograph remains flexible for editorial, property, heritage, architecture, business, archive, website, report, magazine and blog use, while the surviving Co-operative Insurance Society Limited wording gives a clear link to Manchester's co-operative, commercial and modernist past.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXX284 - Early versions of this rattle or ratchet are said to have existed since Biblical times, when it was a type of musical instrument. The rattle consists of a gearwheel and small stiff pieces of wood linked to a handle. Swinging the handle moves the rattle head round, forcing the wood against the gearwheel, creating a series of clicks or rattling sounds. The faster the rotation, the louder the noise.
Between the 1940s and 1960s wooden rattles were a common sight and sound at British football matches, including those held at the Plough Lane stadium of Wimbledon Football Club and the Sandy Lane terraces of Tooting & Mitcham F C. Fans would wave their rattles enthusiastically, sing team anthems and chants, creating a wall of sound designed to cheer on the home team and silence their opponents. Rattles were eventually banned during the 1970s, to prevent them from being used as weapons by football hooligans however by this stage they were already falling out of fashion.

It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3Y98K - Durex is a brand of condoms and personal lubricants owned by the British company Reckitt Benckiser. It was initially developed in London under the purview of the London Rubber Company and British Latex Products Ltd, where it was manufactured between 1932 and 1994. The London Rubber Company was formed in 1915, and the Durex brand name (Durability, reliability, and excellence) was launched in 1929, although London Rubber did not begin manufacturing own-brand condoms until 1932, in collaboration with a rubber technology student from Poland named Lucian Lundau. The first book on The London Rubber Company and the history of Durex condoms, written by Jessica Borge, was published in September 2020 by McGill-Queen's University Press.
The London Rubber Company later merged with SSL International, since 2010 which has been owned by the Anglo-Dutch company Reckitt Benckiser. It is one of the best-selling condom brands around the world, with 30% of the global market. In 2006, Durex condoms were the second-best-selling brand of condoms in the United States, with Trojan condoms being the first. It is supplied by, among others, the company Karex.
In 2007 the last factory making Durex condoms in the UK stopped manufacturing and production has since moved to China, India and Thailand. The modern range includes a wide variety of latex condom, including the Sheik and Ramses brands in North America, and the Avanti condom. Durex also provides a range of lubricants and sex toys.
Although Durex was not an official sponsor of the Olympic Games, Durex provided 150,000 free condoms to more than 10,000 athletes that competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGDBGD - Punched tape or perforated paper tape is a form of data storage that consists of a long strip of paper in which holes are punched. It developed from and was subsequently used alongside punched cards, differing in that the tape is continuous.
Punched cards, and chains of punched cards, were used for control of looms in the 18th century. Use for telegraphy systems started in 1842. Punched tape was used throughout the 19th and for much of the 20th centuries for programmable looms, teleprinter communication, for input to computers of the 1950s and 1960s, and later as a storage medium for minicomputers and CNC machine tools. During the Second World War, high-speed punched tape systems using optical readout methods were used in code breaking systems. Punched tape was used to transmit data for manufacture of read-only memory chips.
Data was represented by the presence or absence of a hole at a particular location. Tapes originally had five rows of holes for data across the width of the tape. Later tapes had six, seven, or eight rows. A 1944 electro-mechanical programmable calculating machine, the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator or Harvard Mark I, used paper tape with 24 rows.
A row of smaller sprocket holes was always punched to be used to synchronize tape movement. Originally, this was done using a wheel with radial teeth called a sprocket wheel. Later, optical readers made use of the sprocket holes to generate timing pulses. The sprocket holes were slightly closer to one edge of the tape, dividing the tape into unequal widths, to make it unambiguous which way to orient the tape in the reader.
Tape for punching was usually 0.00394 inches (0.100 mm) thick. The two most common widths were 11⁄16 inch (17 mm) for five bit codes, and 1 inch (25 mm) for tapes with six or more bits. Hole spacing was 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) in both directions. Data holes were 0.072 inches (1.8 mm) in diameter
sprocket feed holes were 0.046 inches (1.2 mm)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWEXJ - EKCO (from Eric Kirkham Cole Limited) was a British electronics company producing radio and television sets from 1924 until 1960. Expanding into plastic production for its own use, Ekco Plastics produced both radio cases and later domestic plastic products
the plastics company became Lin Pac Mouldings Ltd.
The company's founder Eric Kirkham Cole was born on 4 July 1901 at Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and was educated at Southend Day Technical School, followed by a three-year apprenticeship. Cole and his future wife Muriel Bradshaw started out making radio sets in 1924.
William Streatfield Verrells, a schoolmaster and freelance journalist from Southend-on-Sea, wrote an article in a local newspaper asking if it was possible to power a radio set from the mains electricity supply rather than batteries. Cole saw a possible business opportunity
In the late 1930s, Ekco began producing its own radio valves at its Southend-on-Sea works. Following the company's decision to abandon the venture, the plant was converted to a lamp factory. In 1943, Ekco acquired Ensign Lamps based in Preston. In 1950, Ekco sold 51% of its lighting subsidiary, Ekco-Ensign Electric Ltd, to Thorn Electrical Industries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF7T9 - Scholes is an urban area in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. Scholes is immediately to the east of Wigan's town centre
separated from the commercial area by the River Douglas.
Historically a part of Lancashire, Scholes is noted for its council estate and series of tower blocks, which are prominent features in this area of the town.
North West England has several places called Scholes. Some, like Scholes in Wigan, are simply areas within towns, however, some are actual villages in their own right which are totally stand-alone.[1]
Scholes was once a ward of Wigan, east of the town centre. As described in the Victoria Histories of the Counties of England, Lancashire (VCH Lancs, Vol. 4), the district formerly had four wards: St George and St Patrick, the innermost divided by a street called Scholes, and Lindsay and St Catherine's outside. It is now contained in the Wigan Central ward.
The Church of St Catherine was consecrated in 1841 and has a small graveyard attached. In October 1864 representatives of James Horrocks of Spennymoor, claiming to be the heir of Robert Ford who died in 1772, took possession of the Manor House' in Scholes and were besieged for some days, to the excitement of the town

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NYNDXT - Ronald Wycherley (17 April 1940 28 January 1983), better known as Billy Fury, was an English musician and actor. An early star of rock and roll, he equalled the Beatles' record of 24 hits in the 1960s and spent 332 weeks on the UK chart. His hit singles include Wondrous Place, Halfway to Paradise and Jealousy. Fury also maintained a film career, notably playing rock performers in Play It Cool in 1962 and That'll Be the Day in 1973.
AllMusic journalist Bruce Eder stated that Fury's mix of rough-hewn good looks and unassuming masculinity, coupled with an underlying vulnerability, all presented with a good voice and some serious musical talent, helped turn [him] into a major rock and roll star in short order. Others have suggested that his rapid rise to prominence was due to his Elvis-influenced hip swivelling and, at times, highly suggestive stage act
Fury concentrated less on rock and roll and more on mainstream ballads, such as Halfway to Paradise and Jealousy (which reached No. 3 and No. 2 respectively in the UK Singles Chart in 1961). Fury confessed to the NME that I wanted people to think of me simply as a singer and not, more specifically, as a rock singer. I'm growing up, and I want to broaden my scope. I shall continue to sing rock songs, but at the same time my stage act is not going to be as wild in the future. It was Decca's decision to mould Fury into a teen idol after his last self-penned song, My Christmas Prayer, had failed to chart. The years 1961 through 1963 were Fury's best years chartwise. In 1962, he appeared in his first film, Play It Cool, modelled on the Elvis films. It featured Helen Shapiro, Danny Williams, Shane Fenton and Bobby Vee, who appeared with the Vernons Girls. The hit single from the film was Once Upon a Dream. There were other notable performances by several British actors and performers such as Richard Wattis, Lionel Blair and Dennis Price.
Fury's We Want Billy! (1963) was one of the first live albums

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JJEY - Priscilla Maria Veronica White OBE (27 May 1943 1 August 2015), better known as Cilla Black, was an English singer, television presenter and actress.
Championed by her friends the Beatles, Black began her career as a singer in 1963. Her singles Anyone Who Had a Heart and You're My World both reached number one in the UK in 1964. She had 11 top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart between then and 1971, and an additional eight hits that made the top 40. In May 2010, new research published by BBC Radio 2 showed that her version of Anyone Who Had a Heart was the UK's biggest-selling single by a female artist in the 1960s. You're My World was also a modest hit in the U.S., peaking at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Along with a successful recording career in the 1960s and early 1970s, Black hosted her own BBC variety show, Cilla (19681976). After a brief time as a comedy actress, she became a prominent television presenter in the 1980s and 1990s, hosting hit entertainment shows such as Blind Date (19852003), Surprise Surprise (19842001) and The Moment of Truth (19982001). In 2013, Black celebrated 50 years in show business. ITV honoured this milestone with a one-off entertainment special which aired on 16 October 2013, The One & Only Cilla Black, featuring Black herself and hosted by Paul O'Grady.
Black died on 1 August 2015 at the age of 72, after a fall in her villa in Estepona. The day after her funeral, the compilation album The Very Best of Cilla Black went to number one on the UK Albums Chart and the New Zealand Albums Chart

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JJJK - Priscilla Maria Veronica White OBE (27 May 1943 1 August 2015), better known as Cilla Black, was an English singer, television presenter and actress.
The day after her funeral, the compilation album The Very Best of Cilla Black went to number one on the UK Albums Chart and the New Zealand Albums Chart
it was her first number one album. In 2017, a statue of Black commissioned by her sons was unveiled outside the Cavern Club's original entrance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P03Y - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M5K - The 405-line monochrome analogue television broadcasting system was the first fully electronic television system to be used in regular broadcasting. The number of television lines influences the image resolution, or quality of the picture.
It was introduced with the BBC Television Service in 1936, suspended for the duration of World War II, and remained in operation in the UK until 1985. It was also used between 1961 and 1982 in Ireland, as well as from 1957 to 1973 for the Rediffusion Television cable service in Hong Kong.
Sometimes called the Marconi-EMI system, it was developed in 1934 by the EMI Research Team led by Isaac Shoenberg. The figure of 405 lines had been chosen following discussions over Sunday lunch at the home of Alan Blumlein. The system used interlacing
EMI had been experimenting with a 243-line all-electronic interlaced system since 1933. In the 405 system the scanning lines were broadcast in two complementary fields, 50 times per second, creating 25 frames per second. The actual image was 376 lines high and interlaced, with additional unused lines making the frame up to 405 lines to give the slow circuitry time to prepare for the next frame
in modern terms it would be described as 376i.
At the time of its introduction the 405-line system was referred to as high definition which it was, compared to earlier systems, although of lower definition than 625-line and later standards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0KPHJ - Penny Lane is a road in the south Liverpool suburb of Mossley Hill. The name also applies to the area surrounding its junction with Smithdown Road and Allerton Road, and to the roundabout at Smithdown Place that was the location for a major bus terminus, originally an important tram junction of Liverpool Corporation Tramways. The roundabout was a frequent stopping place for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison during their years as schoolchildren and students. Bus journeys via Penny Lane and the area itself subsequently became familiar elements in the early years of the LennonMcCartney songwriting partnership. In 2009, McCartney reflected:
Penny Lane was kind of nostalgic, but it was really [about] a place that John and I knew ... I'd get a bus to his house and I'd have to change at Penny Lane, or the same with him to me, so we often hung out at that terminus, like a roundabout. It was a place that we both knew, and so we both knew the things that turned up in the story.
Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. It was reliving childhood

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGT80 - The British Rail Class 86 is a class of electric locomotives built during the 1960s. Developed as a 'standard' electric locomotive from earlier prototype models, one hundred of these locomotives were built from 1965 to 1966 to haul trains on the then newly electrified West Coast Main Line (WCML) from London Euston to Birmingham, Crewe, Liverpool, Manchester and later Glasgow and Preston. Introduction of the class enabled the replacement of many steam locomotives, which were finally withdrawn by British Rail in 1968.
Under the earlier BR classification system, the type was given the designation AL6 (meaning the sixth design of AC locomotive) and locomotives were numbered E3101E3200. In 1968, this was changed to Class 86 when British Rail introduced the TOPS classification system.
The class was built to haul passenger and freight trains alike on the West Coast Main Line
however, some members of the class also saw use on the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) between London Liverpool Street and Norwich, after the remainder of the line north of Colchester was electrified in the mid-1980s. The type has had a generally long and successful career, with some members of the class seeing main line service lives in the UK of up to 55 years. Most regular passenger duties of the class came to end on both the WCML and the GEML in the early-to-mid-2000s, after a career of up to 40 years. Some members of the class remained in use for charter work and for freight work with Freightliner until 2021. A number of the class were exported to Bulgaria and Hungary and remain in use. As of 2022, three Class 86s remain preserved in usable condition in the UK
all are in private ownership.
The order for 100 locomotives was placed in 1963
it was split between two manufacturers, with the English Electric Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows building 60 locomotives and British Rail Doncaster Works producing 40. The Doncaster and Newton-built locomotives were not identical

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2RPH - There are mainly two types of ice cream vans in the United Kingdom: a hard van, which sells scoop ice cream and is only equipped with a freezer and a soft van, which has a freezer and also a soft serve whippy machine for serving ice cream cones and screwballs. They are usually converted from factory standard vans with the rear cut away and replaced with a fibre glass body (to reduce the weight).
Because of the British climate, running an ice cream van profitably is not only very difficult outside summer, but is also an unpredictable business. A summer heatwave can provoke a massive upturn in fortunes for a few days, but after the weather has cooled sales drop off dramatically. The need to take advantage of rare and short-lived opportunities can result in fierce rivalry between ice cream vans in coterminous areas, with the main disputes being over who is entitled to sell ice cream in a particular 'patch'. This has also led to some ice cream van vendors diversifying and selling other products such as crisps, chips, burgers or hot dogs from their vehicles at other times of the year.
In a number of Local Authority areas, particularly in London Boroughs with existing street markets, street trading regulations prohibit ice cream vans from remaining in one static location. The legislation also contains powers to ban ice-cream vans from specific streets. Proposals in the current London Local Authorities Bill would allow only 15 minutes trading per vehicle per street each day. There also exists a nationwide code of practice for the use of chimes, which limits the volume to 80 dB and the duration to twelve seconds, but these are rarely observed nor enforced. Chimes must not be played more often than every three minutes, near hospitals, schools and churches when they are in use.
In Scotland, ice cream vans have been used to sell smuggled cigarettes and, in the 1980s Glasgow ice cream wars, as front organizations to sell illicit drugs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY558Y - Dugena is a German watch manufacturer, currently part of the EganaGoldpfeil group.
BEGINNING AS ALPINA GERMANY
The name Dugena is one of Germany's most famous watch brands. The roots of the company lie in Switzerland, namely with the Swiss watchmaker association Corporation d'Horlogers Suisse, which was founded in 1883 by Gottlieb Hauser. This was called Union Horlogère from 1901 and presented itself at this time with the brand name Alpina, which was first used as the name of a proprietary caliber.
RENAMING OF THE GERMAN ALPINA TO DUGENA
From about 1909, there is a branch in Glashütte, which bears the name Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina. 1917 the Deutsche Uhrmachergenossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaker cooperative Alpina) is created by the concentration of the watch factories Biel-Geneva and Glashütte in Eisenach. 1927 their headquarters is moved to Berlin.
During World War II, the Allies prohibit the Union Horlogère to continue to market in Germany under the name Alpina. Therefore, 1942 in Berlin it is decided to rename Alpina into DUGENA - Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaking cooperative Alpina). As a unique trademark the circle in the triangle is chosen, under which the new brand achieves a high level of awareness.
GREAT SUCCESS AFTER THE WAR
1948, the headquarters of Dugena, which had been in the eastern part of Berlin, is moved to Darmstadt. Under the successful management of the director Willi Tempel Dugena becomes a byword for reliable and modern quality watches in West Germany.
The years of the Wirtschaftswunder (German economic miracle after the war) as well as the 1960s and the 1970s bring unparalleled success to the company. Both with ladies watches as with men's watches the brand gaines a considerable reputation. As one of only very few watch manufacturers Dugena is not affected by the quartz crisis, as it manages to establish itself with high quality quartz collections and is thereby open to new buyer generations. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNHKC8 - The Jaguar XK140 is a sports car manufactured by Jaguar between 1954 and 1957 as the successor to the XK120. Upgrades included more interior space, improved brakes, rack and pinion steering, increased suspension travel, and telescopic shock absorbers instead of the older lever arm design
The XK140 was introduced in late 1954 and sold as a 1955 model. Exterior changes that distinguished it from the XK120 included more substantial front and rear bumpers with overriders, and flashing turn signals (operated by a switch on the dash) above the front bumper.
Boot emblem
The grille remained the same size but became a one-piece cast unit with fewer, and broader, vertical bars. The Jaguar badge was incorporated into the grille surround. A chrome trim strip ran along the centre of the bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk) lid. An emblem on the boot lid contained the words Winner Le Mans 19513.
The interior was made more comfortable for taller drivers by moving the engine, firewall and dash forward to give 3 inches (76 mm) more legroom. Two 6-volt batteries, one in each front wing were fitted to the Fixed Head Coupe, but Drop Heads and the Open Two Seater had a single 12-volt battery installed in the front wing on the passenger side.
The XK140 was powered by the William Heynes designed 3.4 litre Jaguar XK double overhead camshaft inline-6 engine, with the Special Equipment modifications from the XK120, which raised the specified power by 10 bhp to 190 bhp (142 kW) gross at 5500 rpm, as standard. The optional C-Type cylinder head carried over from the XK120 catalogue, and produced 210 bhp (157 kW) gross at 5750 rpm.
When fitted with the C-type head, 2-inch sand-cast H8 carburettors, heavier torsion bars and twin exhaust pipes, the car was designated XK140 SE in the UK and XK140 MC in North America.
In 1956 the XK140 became the first Jaguar sports car to be offered with automatic transmission. As with the XK120, wire wheels and dual exhausts were options, with most XK140s impo

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJYRG4 - Smiths experienced a varied career as a watchmaker. The first watches were produced in a factory built in Cheltenham, built at the start of the Second World War for aircraft instrumentation. This factory produced the highest grade of Smiths watches, these are the ones which typically are more collectable. These include the Smiths De Luxe, Imperial, English Imperial, Everest, Astral and W10.
Previously Smiths and the Ingersoll Watch Company founded the Anglo-Celtic Watch Co Ltd in 1946, producing watches in Wales up until 1980. This joint venture became one of the largest producers of watches in Europe. The same factory produced the cheaper Smiths Empire watches. These watches are quite common and can be purchased for under £20. These are the lowest quality watches produced by Smiths and for amateur watch repairers are great watches to practice with due to the surplus of watches available. The dials of these watches are often marked with Made In Gt. Britain.
The Astral range was introduced in 1959, using a 17-jewel centre second movement. In 1964 the slimline movement was used in the Astral manufactured up until 1970. The most common variants of the Slimline movement are the 60466E or the 60465E.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0KWME - Fab is an ice cream brand made by Nestlé. Both the ice lolly on a stick brands 'Zoom' and 'FAB', were introduced in United Kingdom by J. Lyons & Co. Ltd., and were brought out in order to take advantage of the popularity of Gerry Anderson's television series Fireball XL5 and Thunderbirds.
The brand Zoom was launched first, in April/May 1963, to capitalise on Fireball XL5, with Fab appearing in May 1967. Initially the Zoom's commercial target was for boys only, being rocket shaped, which left a vast market niche that was filled by the development of the Fab
a more feminine looking lolly designed in mind for girls. The lolly was originally pitched at the female market with the association to purchase being the attraction of Lady Penelope. Regularly used in the show was the phrase F-A-B as an equivalent to Roger (communications jargon indicating that a message has been received). The original lolly packaging had a prominent image of Lady Penelope and her butler/driver Parker on the wrapper.
The lolly consists of strawberry fruit ice and cream with the top portion dipped in chocolate and coated with sugar confectionery (Sugar strands). In the modern era, their popularity has reduced having been replaced by lollies such as the Twister and various ice snacks based on cartoon characters[citation needed], however Nestlé still continue production of the iced snack into the 21st century, both as a single item and as part of a multipack.
The description on the packaging reads Real Strawberry and vanilla flavour ice lolly with chocolate flavour coating (5%) and sugar strands (5%).
The fab lolly, Fruit And Berries, has changed from a jelly type centre many years ago, to strawberry ice used now. An orange variety has also been manufactured as has a limited edition lemon flavour, a limited edition apple and blackcurrant flavour (in 2000), and a limited edition tropical flavour in 2003. A new limited edition lolly was created in 2018, to celebrate fifty years of Fab

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JCW1XP - Sir Richard Starkey MBE (born 7 July 1940), known professionally as Ringo Starr, is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and actor who achieved international fame as the drummer for the Beatles. Starr occasionally sang lead vocals with the group, usually for one song on each album, including Yellow Submarine and With a Little Help from My Friends. He also wrote and sang the Beatles songs Don't Pass Me By and Octopus's Garden, and is credited as a co-writer of four others.
Starr was afflicted by life-threatening illnesses during childhood, with periods of prolonged hospitalisation. He briefly held a position with British Rail before securing an apprenticeship as a machinist at a Liverpool school equipment manufacturer. Soon afterwards, Starr became interested in the UK skiffle craze and developed a fervent admiration for the genre. In 1957, he co-founded his first band, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group, which earned several prestigious local bookings before the fad succumbed to American rock and roll around early 1958. When the Beatles formed in 1960, Starr was a member of another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. After achieving moderate success in the UK and Hamburg, he quit the Hurricanes when he was asked to join the Beatles in August 1962, replacing Pete Best.
In addition to the Beatles' films, Starr has acted in numerous others. After the band's break-up in 1970, he released several successful singles including the US top-ten hit It Don't Come Easy, and number ones Photograph and You're Sixteen. His most successful UK single was Back Off Boogaloo, which peaked at number two. He achieved commercial and critical success with his 1973 album Ringo, which was a top-ten release in both the UK and the US. Starr has featured in numerous documentaries, hosted television shows, narrated the first two series of the children's television program Thomas & Friends and portrayed Mr. Conductor

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JCW1XT - George Harrison MBE (25 February 1943 29 November 2001) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles. Sometimes called the quiet Beatle, Harrison embraced Indian culture and helped broaden the scope of popular music through his incorporation of Indian instrumentation and Hindu-aligned spirituality in the Beatles' work. Although the majority of the band's songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, most Beatles albums from 1965 onwards contained at least two Harrison compositions. His songs for the group include Taxman, Within You Without You, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes the Sun and Something. Harrison's earliest musical influences included George Formby and Django Reinhardt
subsequent influences were Carl Perkins, Chet Atkins and Chuck Berry.
By 1965, he had begun to lead the Beatles into folk rock through his interest in Bob Dylan and the Byrds, and towards Indian classical music through his use of Indian instruments, such as the sitar, which he had become acquainted with on the set of the film Help! He played sitar on numerous Beatles songs, starting with Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown). Having initiated the band's embrace of Transcendental Meditation in 1967, he subsequently developed an association with the Hare Krishna movement. After the band's break-up in 1970, Harrison released the triple album All Things Must Pass, a critically acclaimed work that produced his most successful hit single, My Sweet Lord, and introduced his signature sound as a solo artist, the slide guitar. He also organised the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh with Indian musician Ravi Shankar, a precursor to later benefit concerts such as Live Aid. In his role as a music and film producer, Harrison produced acts signed to the Beatles' Apple record label before founding Dark Horse Records in 1974. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JCW1XX - Sir James Paul McCartney CH MBE (born 18 June 1942) is an English singer, songwriter and musician who gained worldwide fame with the Beatles, for whom he played bass guitar and shared primary songwriting and lead vocal duties with John Lennon. One of the most successful composers and performers of all time, McCartney is known for his melodic approach to bass-playing, versatile and wide tenor vocal range, and musical eclecticism, exploring genres ranging from prerock and roll pop to classical, ballads, and electronica. His songwriting partnership with Lennon remains the most successful in history.
Born in Liverpool, McCartney taught himself piano, guitar and songwriting as a teenager, having been influenced by his father, a jazz player, and rock and roll performers such as Little Richard and Buddy Holly. He began his career when he joined Lennon's skiffle group, the Quarrymen, in 1957, which evolved into the Beatles in 1960. Sometimes called the cute Beatle, McCartney later involved himself with the London avant-garde and spearheaded the incorporation of experimental aesthetics into the Beatles' studio productions. Starting with the 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, he gradually became the band's de facto leader, providing the creative impetus for most of their music and film projects. Many of his Beatles songs, including And I Love Her, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, and Blackbird, rank among the most covered songs in history. While primarily a bassist with the Beatles, in various songs he played a number of other instruments, including keyboards, guitars, and drums.
After the Beatles disbanded, he debuted as a solo artist with the 1970 album McCartney and formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda, and Denny Laine. Led by McCartney, Wings was one of the most successful bands of the 1970s, and he wrote or co-wrote their US or UK number-one hits My Love, Band on the Run, Listen to What the Man Said, Silly Love Songs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JCW1Y0 - John Winston Ono Lennon (born John Winston Lennon
9 October 1940 8 December 1980) was an English singer, songwriter, musician and peace activist who achieved worldwide fame as founder, co-songwriter, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles. Lennon's work was characterised by the rebellious nature and acerbic wit of his music, writing and drawings, on film, and in interviews. His songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history.
Born in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager. In 1956, he formed the Quarrymen, which evolved into the Beatles in 1960. Sometimes called the smart Beatle, he was initially the group's de facto leader, a role gradually ceded to McCartney. Through his songwriting in the Beatles, Lennon embraced a myriad of musical influences, initially writing and co-writing rock and pop-oriented hit songs in the band's early years, then later incorporating experimental elements into his compositions in the latter half of the Beatles' career as his songs became known for their increasing innovation. Lennon soon expanded his work into other media by participating in numerous films, including How I Won the War, and authoring In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works, both collections of nonsense writings and line drawings. Starting with All You Need Is Love, his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and the larger counterculture of the 1960s. In 1969, he started the Plastic Ono Band with his second wife, the multimedia artist Yoko Ono, held the two-week-long anti-war demonstration Bed-ins for Peace, and left the Beatles to embark on a solo career.
Between 1968 and 1972, Lennon and Ono collaborated on many works, including a trilogy of avant-garde albums, several more films, his solo debut John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, and the international top-10 singles Give Peace a Chance, Instant Karma!, Imagine and Happy Xmas (War Is Over).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC75R4 - The Ricoh Company, Ltd. ( Kabushiki-gaisha Rikō ) is a Japanese multinational imaging and electronics company. It was founded by the now-defunct commercial division of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (Riken) known as the Riken Concern, on 6 February 1936 as Riken Sensitized Paper (Riken Kankōshi). Ricoh's headquarters are located in Ota, Tokyo
The origin of watchmaking at Ricoh comes from Takano, a clock manufacturer established in 1899, and a second company, founded in 1913. The company produced metal clocks before the war, and was merged into one company in 1924. It was incorporated in 1938 as Takano Seimitsu Kogyo Co., shortly after switching to weapons manufacturing.
1960s and 1970s: Ricoh made wrist watches for both the Japanese domestic market and international markets, briefly entering into a partnership with Hamilton Watch Company, for the creation of the Ricoh Hamilton Electric watch
On May 8, 1962, Takano was taken over by the larger Ricoh company. Takano became Ricoh Watch Ltd. in 1963 and the watches were re-branded as Ricoh from late 1962 onward. Ricoh was founded in 1936 as Riken Kankoshi Co. Ltd., a producer of optics and was successful in cameras and industrial equipment.
The joint venture with Hamilton (which owned a 60% stake) continued, with American movements assembled and cased in Japan for the domestic market there. The movement, Ricoh Cal. 555E, was the same as the Standard Time Cal. 130E or Hamilton Cal. 505. Sales were poor in Japan, with most taking place on US military bases where Seiko was not as strong a competitor. The venture ended in 1965, with some leftover stock sold under the Hamilton Vantage brand in the United States.
Ricoh launched an automatic watch of their own in October 1962. Known as the Dynamic, it had a 33 jewel movement with instantaneous day and date change. After initial quality issues, which resulted in large-scale returns, the movement was perfected and remained in production until the 1990s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGY0 - Iconic clothing chain Stolen from Ivor's last shop has been saved - thanks to the M.E.N.
Founder Ivor Hazan, 67, opened his first boutique on the King Street West in Manchester city centre in 1965 and his 40 stores became a Mecca for fashion hipsters across the region.
He announced last month he was to shut the doors on his last remaining shop in Stockport, which opened in 1974, due to declining sales.
However after the story was featured in the pages of the M.E.N and on our website, the brand has undergone a revival.
Ivor says he has been inundated with people coming into the shop and sharing their stories of the off-the-wall clobber they bought from him in their youth.
One man even broke down in tears whilst other wanted to buy his distinctive yellow carrier bags and sell them online.
And after seeing a spike in sales Ivor says he will keep the shop open - for now at least.
His first store opened at the height of the swinging' Sixties.
It was close to a boutique owned by United hero George Best and he had a gentleman's agreement that he would not sell suits if the United ace didn't sell jeans.
In 1966 it became the first store in the north of England to stock Levis jeans, which then cost £2.37 a pair.
The brand grew and at its peak it had 43 stores across the north west, including Stockport, Altrincham, Bolton and Bury.
However all but seven of them were forced to close in 2002 after the company went into administration.
And Ivor said stores such as Primark were killing' independent stores like his.
But due to the phenomenal response after we featured their plight he has shelved plans to take his operation solely online and he will keep the doors open of the shop on Prince's Street in Stockport town centre.
The Didsbury entrepreneur said: It's just been absolutely amazing.
Since the M.E.N ran our story we've had so many people coming in and telling us about things they bought 20 years ago.
Telling us that their mums used to bring them as kids.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN98 - The Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Company of Swindon, Wiltshire, was a British company that was famous for producing high-quality gramophone turntables. It was formed by the jewellers Garrard & Co in 1915. The company was sold to Plessey, an electronics conglomerate, in 1960. During the period 1976-1978, Garrard developed demonstrators of the novel video disc technology. Although the team recognised the future potential of this data storage technology, Plessey chose not to invest. After several years in decline, Garrard was sold by Plessey to Gradiente Electronics of Brazil in 1979 and series production was moved to Brazil (Manaus). The remaining Garrard research and development operation in Swindon was reduced to a skeleton operation until completely shut down in 1992. Then, Gradiente licensed the Garrard name to Terence O'Sullivan, who operated as Loricraft Audio, in 1997.
Between 1992 and 1997, the Garrard brand name was licensed to other companies in the US, which imported electronic items built by different, unrelated Far Eastern manufacturers. These included Garrard branded cassette decks, CD players, stereo receivers, portable radio/cassette players, portable Walkman type cassette players, serial-port printer cables, universal TV/audio remote controls, and other miscellany, including turntables that had no connection with any original Garrard design.
In 2018, Cadence Audio SA, who also own the British turntable and tonearm manufacturer SME Limited, took ownership of the Garrard brand and registered trademarks when they purchased Loricraft Audio Ltd. The business was restructured to run under the name of Garrard Turntables UK Ltd.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN9B - Standalone audio stereo FM tuners are sought after for audiophile and TV/FM DX applications, especially those produced in the 1970s and early 1980s, when performance and manufacturing standards were among the highest. In many instances the tuner may be modified to improve performance. Electronics specialists and hobbyists buy, collect and restore vintage FM or AM/FM audio tuners on the secondary market. The restoration usually begins with replacing the electrolytic capacitors that may age over time. The tuner is outfitted with improved tolerance and better sounding upgraded parts. Prices have increased relative to the increasing demand for the older audio tuners. Those with the most value are the best sounding, most rare (collectible), the best DX capable (distance reception) and the known build quality of the component, as it left the factory.
Most of the early tuner models were designed and manufactured to receive only the AM broadcast band. As FM became more popular, the limitations of AM became more apparent, and FM became the primary listening focus, especially for stereo and music broadcasting.
The McIntosh MR78 is known as one of the first FM tuners precise enough to tune into a weaker station broadcast on the same frequency as another stronger signal.
In Europe, where a second AM broadcast band is used for longwave broadcasting, tuners may be fitted with both the standard medium wave and the additional longwave band. However, radios with only medium wave are also common, especially in countries where there are no longwave broadcasters. Rarely, radios are sold with only FM and longwave, but no medium wave band. Some tuners may also be equipped with one or more short wave bands.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X6P - The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a full-sized luxury car produced by British automaker Rolls-Royce in various forms from 1965 to 1980. It was the first of the marque to use unitary body and chassis construction.
The Silver Shadow was produced from 1965 to 1976, and the Silver Shadow II from 1977 to 1980. To date, the combined model run of 30,057 units manufactured is the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce model
A Bentley-badged version, the T-series, was produced from 1965 through 1980 in 2,336 examples.
The Silver Shadow was originally intended to be called Rolls-Royce Silver Mist, but was replaced with Silver Shadow at the last minute due to Mist meaning manure or crap in German. It was designed with several modernisations in response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation, most notably in its unitary construction.
Other new features included disc brakes replacing drums, and independent rear suspension instead of the outdated live rear axle design of previous Rolls-Royce models.
The standard wheelbase Silver Shadow measured 203.5 inches (5,170 mm), 4,700 lb (2,100 kg) and had a book price of £6,557 in the first year of production.
The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Left-hand-drive models were coupled to the recently introduced Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic gearbox sourced from General Motors (GM). Pre-1970, right-hand-drive (RHD) models used a highly modified, aluminum-cased version of the original cast-iron 4-speed Hydra-Matic gearbox that had been built in Crewe under license from GM since 1953. From 1968, export RHD cars gained the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, and by 1970, the 4-speed unit had been completely phased out even in the home market

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTE8 - Fire Safety Review Gives Westfield House the All Clear'
Westfield House towering above Bridgwater's West Street since 1965
Sedgemoor District Council's Corporate Scrutiny committee, under the chairmanship of Westover Councillor Brian Smedley, has reviewed the Council's response to the Grenfell Tower fire disaster in its own hi-rise properties and has concluded that all necessary steps have been taken to re-assure tenants and where there was cause for concern measures are being introduced to improve the situation.
On 14 June at about 1am, a fire started on the 4th floor of the Grenfell Tower block in London housing some 600 people. Grenfell Tower had 24 floors with 6 flats per floor, an alarm system that worked and the Fire Brigade in immediate attendance yet at least 80 died most of them in 23 of the blocks 129 flats
Ward Councillor Brian Smedley immediately called for urgent review of safety measures
On the morning of 14th June, Scrutiny Chair Cllr Smedley visited Sedgemoor's (and Somerset's) only tower block, Westfield House and nearby lo-rise blocks around West Street. Hi Rise blocks are defined as anything above 18 metres'-usually 5 storeys or more. Noting resident's concerns he immediately wrote to Chief Executive Kerry Rickards and SDC Leader Duncan McGinty asking for a swift Council response to re-assure tenants and offered to hold a Scrutiny meeting at which residents and Homes in Sedgemoor officers could participate.
Cllr Smedley said The key question asked was How can a small kitchen fire in one flat lead to this catastrophe? How could it happen there and could it happen here?' Residents raised four areas of concern -The Stay Put Policy, the lack of a central sprinkler system, the lack of a central Fire Alarm and , crucially, the Cladding used which seemed to have contributed to the spread of the fire. We felt a Scrutiny Working Party should look at these issues first and present a full and open report to be put on the table for the public

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA89 - historic Shell Beckmeter petrol pump finished in vivid red and yellow, topped by an illuminated Shell globe and fronted by a mechanical register marked in gallons. The image shows a classic piece of mid twentieth century forecourt equipment, closely associated with the look and feel of British filling stations, roadside garages and service forecourts in the 1950s and 1960s. The Beckmeter name is prominently displayed on the cream panel, while the rounded cabinet, enamel-like colour treatment, glass window and analogue measuring dial give the photograph strong period character. This makes it highly suitable for themes including motoring heritage, petroliana, transport history, oil company branding, classic petrol pumps, vintage garage equipment, retro design, nostalgia, collectors' memorabilia and the visual culture of post-war road travel. Because the register is graduated in gallons rather than litres, the picture also works well as an illustration of how fuel retailing has changed over time, from attendant-operated pumps and mechanical metering to modern self-service dispensers with digital screens and litre pricing. The image can support editorial use in features on classic cars, historic filling stations, service station design, industrial design, advertising history, Shell branding and the evolution of the UK motor trade. Comparable Beckmeter pumps are commonly described by vintage petrol pump specialists and architectural historians as typical of the 1950s and 1960s, which aligns with the styling seen here. The warm colours, glowing globe and restored presentation give the subject real visual punch, making it suitable for magazines, books, museums, blogs, transport publications and heritage websites looking for a clean, recognisable symbol of twentieth century motoring life. The dark interior background helps the pump stand out, emphasising its sculptural form and nostalgic showroom appeal.

The Gazelle was the first Singer to be produced following the take-over of the Singer company by the Rootes Group in 1956 and was a version of the mainstream Hillman Minx differing mainly in retaining the Singer overhead cam engine. Externally the only significant difference was a restyled nose based around a traditional Singer grille. The new car was announced in late September 1956.
The body style followed by the Gazelle between 1956 and 1967 came to be known as the Audax body, with significant input from the US based Loewy design organisation, highly regarded at the time partly on account of Loewy's input to several iconic Studebaker designs.
The Gazelle was initially offered in saloon and convertible body styles. The Gazelle Series II, offered from autumn 1957, was also available as an estate car, and had optional overdrive and larger fuel tank.
The suspension was independent at the front using coil springs while at the rear was a live axle and half elliptic leaf springs. The steering gear used a worm and nut system.
As standard, the car had a bench front seat but individual seats were available as an option. To allow for the bench seat, the handbrake lever was between the seat and the door.
The convertible version had a two position hood where it could be either completely lowered or rolled back to just behind the front seats described as the coupé de ville position. All side windows could be completely lowered. To compensate for the loss of body rigidity by the removal of the roof, extra cross bracing was fitted under the car.
A car with overdrive was tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1957. It had a top speed of 78.0 mph (125.5 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 24.8 seconds. A fuel consumption of 33.5 miles per gallon.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9Y65 - The Singer Gazelle name has been applied to two generations of motor cars from the British manufacturer Singer. It was positioned between the basic Hillman range and the more sporting Sunbeam versions

Fifty-three is the 16th prime number. It is also an Eisenstein prime, and a Sophie Germain prime. The sum of the first 53 primes is 5830, which is divisible by 53, a property shared by few other numbers.
Fifty-Three is the atomic number of the useful halide iodine, also the racing number of Herbie, a Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of his own, first appearing in the 1969 Walt Disney Film film, The Love Bug. For direct calls to Cuba, the code is +53.
The 53 bus is one that I often travelled on, getting me from Belle Vue, to my first job in Higher Openshaw, Manchester. Bernard Manning described the 53 as the longest bus route in the world, connecting 'Africa with Jerusalem'. That would be due to the route taking in Moss Side and finishing in Cheetham Hill and Prestwich, old home of Manchester's orthodox Jewish community.
Manning was born in the Ancoats district of Manchester, Lancashire. Often reviled as a racist comedian, he had Russian Jewish ancestry on his father's side, as well as roots in Ireland, and was brought up a 'strict Catholic'. He named his house in Alkrington, Greater Manchester, 'Shalom', the Hebrew word for 'peace.'
Manning owned the Embassy club in Harpurhey, Manchester and performed mostly there from the 1980's. I remember one Friday night there with a group from work, after a wormy salad at the Barnaby Rudge. A good work mate from Moss Side was with us and got hassle from Manning for a lot of the night. If we did it again, we would have gone to Pips instead.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BTY7AK - John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 November 22, 1963), often referred to by his initials JFK and Jack, was an American politician who served as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. Kennedy served at the height of the Cold War, and the majority of his work as president concerned relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba. A Democrat, Kennedy represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate prior to becoming president.
Kennedy was born into a wealthy political family in Brookline, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University in 1940, before joining the U.S. Naval Reserve the following year. During World War II, he commanded a series of PT boats in the Pacific theater and earned the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his service. After a brief stint in journalism, Kennedy represented a working-class Boston district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953. He was subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate and served as the junior Senator from Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960. While in the Senate, Kennedy published his book, Profiles in Courage, which won a Pulitzer Prize. In the 1960 presidential election, he narrowly defeated Republican opponent Richard Nixon, who was the incumbent vice president.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BM3JKG - A cotton mill is a building housing spinning or weaving machinery for the production of yarn or cloth from cotton, an important product during the Industrial Revolution in the development of the factory system.
Although some were driven by animal power, most early mills were built in rural areas at fast-flowing rivers and streams using water wheels for power. The development of viable steam engines by Boulton and Watt from 1781 led to the growth of larger, steam-powered mills allowing them to be concentrated in urban mill towns, like Manchester, which with neighbouring Salford had more than 50 mills by 1802.
The mechanisation of the spinning process in the early factories was instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. Limited companies were developed to construct mills, and the trading floors of the cotton exchange in Manchester, created a vast commercial city. Mills generated employment, drawing workers from largely rural areas and expanding urban populations. They provided incomes for girls and women. Child labour was used in the mills, and the factory system led to organised labour. Poor conditions became the subject of exposés, and in England, the Factory Acts were written to regulate them.
The cotton mill, originally a Lancashire phenomenon, was copied in New England and later in the southern states of America. In the 20th century, North West England lost its supremacy to the United States, then to Japan and subsequently to China.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
A car for a lady? This is a track that brings back brilliant memories for me.
According to the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles &
Albums, the band was named after a phrase from the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood song, 'Jackson', misheard by frontman Paddy McAloon. The correct opening lyrics for 'Jackson' are 'We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout' which McAloon misinterpreted as 'hotter than a prefab sprout'. The rest is history.
This track is from the excellent 'From Langley Park to Memphis' album. It was the first single and only actually reached 44 in the UK charts, although spent a month or so there.
The song is a response to Bruce Springsteen's perceived lyrical style and alleged narrow song repertoire. Pat McAloon suggests that Springsteen's worldview is too restricted and that 'some things hurt more, much more, than cars and girls'. Ironically, the song's popularity is partly due to it being misinterpreted as a 'driving song', leading it to appear on compilation albums such as Summer Cruisin' and Top Gear.
Checkout 'Langley Park' for some of the greatest tracks from the band.

Fiat previewed the all new 500 in March 2007. This was exactly 50 years after the first Fiat 500 was presented. The design of the new 2007 Fiat 500 is based on the 2004 Fiat Trepiuno concept. This car features a distinctive retro-look just like the Volkswagen New Beetle and BMW MINI but is substantially cheaper than those cars.
It has a starting price of \u20ac10,500 (similar to how the original Fiat 500 was cheaper than the Volkswagen Beetle and Austin Mini). Fiat shares the underpinnings of the new 500 with Ford for the 2009 Ford Ka. They are made at the Fiat factory in Tychy, Poland.

Exeter West signal box is not at Exeter - it is at Crewe.
Why is this? Because a group of dedicated individuals saved the signalbox from demolition when the signalling in the Exeter area was renewed in 1985, and carefully dismantled it so it could be re-erected as a working museum demonstrating how the larger signal boxes of the past were.
This box is now viewable at Crewe as part of Crewe Heritage Centre display, and signalmen are present most weekends to describe and demonstrate signalling days of the past and answer questions from visitors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D96MT5 - Exeter West Signal Box
Exeter West Signal Box was originally built as a temporary structure by the Great Western Railway in 1913 following the enlargement of Exeter St. David's station It was located to the west of the station, controlling the junction for the London & South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the goods lines avoiding the station, the engine shed and various yards.
The signal box contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers. The box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electrically from a new signal box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of Exeter West in 1985, the Exeter West Group moved in and dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference.
At first, all of the parts were moved to Bristol and a start was made on restoring the box to be a feature at Temple Meads station. However, by summer 1988 it was clear that this project had foundered, but a home was offered at the proposed Swindon Heritage Centre. Everything was moved there, and restoration work continued until 1990. However a seemingly indefinite postponement of the heritage project at Swindon made it necessary to seek another site.
Finally a home was found here at Crewe. Having moved all of the many parts, a start was finally made on the complex task of putting the box back together again in May 1991, the structure was complete and weatherproofed by the end of that year, and the Internal rebuilding continued through 1992. The signal box was formally opened to the public on May Day 1993.

I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.
Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don't come, you get a tan
From standing in the English rain.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.
Expert textpert choking smokers,
Don't you thing the joker laughs at you?
See how they smile like pigs in a sty,
See how they snied.
I'm crying.
Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hari Krishna.
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.
Goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob g'goo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBBH - St Mary and All Saints Church, Great Budworth, is in the centre of the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of 'best' English parish churches. Richards describes it as one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture remaining in Cheshire.
The authors of the Buildings of England series express the opinion that it is one of the most satisfactory Perpendicular churches of Cheshire and its setting brings its qualities out to perfection

Lancaster was opened in 1965 by Rank under the name 'Forton'. When Granada eventually grasped hold of the services, they renamed it to 'Lancaster'. Unusually, Granada later changed this to 'Lancaster (Forton)' - it's not clear whether dropping the name Forton resulted in a drop of trade or just upset a few of the services' fans. This name stuck around for about a decade, but Moto are now slowly dropping the 'Forton' part leaving just 'Lancaster'. The Highways Agency still refer to it as 'Lancaster (Forton)' when there is an incident at the services.
In early 2007, a Marks and Spencers store opened here, replacing the Ladbrokes and Little Chef. The southbound Little Chef went on to become a Greggs.
For many years the name 'Forton services' was used on all example diagrams of road signs, including drawings of non-motorway signs. The services used to be listed by the Highways Agency as an approved truckstop, but this is no longer the case.
The southbound side once had a tourist information office, itself formerly a fast food unit of some sort.
