Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EY3CNN - . City Radio Stores historic shopfront at 37 Bond Street in Ealing, West London, England, UK. Photographed on 27 November 2023. The recorded location is 37 Bond Street, Ealing, London W5 5AS, England, UK. The long-established electronics and radio shop traded from the distinctive frontage from 1929 until closing in 2024, ending almost a century of business in the area. Its old-fashioned signage, caged window displays and specialist electrical stock made the premises a recognisable local landmark and a rare survivor from an earlier era of independent high-street retail. The frontage provides a strong visual record of a disappearing form of traditional urban retail. For the story of commercial history, it is useful to note that local businesses provide unusually precise social-history evidence because names, branding and uses change more quickly than the buildings they occupy
A shop, café, pub or service company can disappear while the façade survives, leaving photographs as a record of the previous commercial life of the street. The historical setting for accessibility sign is that wayfinding developed from painted names and fingerposts into standardised road, rail and public-information systems
Local signs still retain distinctive typography or bilingual wording even within increasingly consistent national standards. Seen through utility infrastructure, the earlier context is that electricity distribution developed from local undertakings into regional and national networks, while telecommunications shifted from copper telephone lines towards fibre
Street-level equipment records each stage of that transition. For present-day commercial history, 2026 is significant because current interest in community assets and place-making gives photographs of individual businesses added significance when premises close, rebrand or are converted to new uses. Its associated themes also include energy distribution, communications network, and retail premises.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F0K3K5 - Colourful vintage railway poster promotes Happy Holidays at Sunny Southend-on-Sea , presenting the Essex resort as an inviting destination for family leisure and rail tourism. Produced jointly for the London Midland and Scottish Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway, the design dates from around 1945“1947 and belongs to the golden age of British transport advertising.
The illustration shows a cheerful family walking through landscaped clifftop gardens above the Thames Estuary. Below them are the seafront, pleasure grounds, beach, promenade and Southend Pier stretching dramatically into the water. A white seabird flies beside the bold yellow and orange lettering, reinforcing the optimistic coastal holiday imagery. The scene combines a panoramic bird's-eye view with idealised figures, flowers and bright summer colours intended to encourage day trips and longer stays by train.
Southend developed rapidly as a seaside resort after railway connections arrived in the nineteenth century. The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway reached the town in 1856, while the Great Eastern Railway opened another route in 1889. Easy access from London helped Southend become one of southern England's best-known destinations for working families and excursion traffic. Its pier, projecting far into the shallow Thames Estuary, became the defining feature of the resort.
The prominent curved sun shelter and Cliff Gardens represented in railway publicity formed part of Southend's interwar investment in its seafront. The shelter was completed in 1928 and survives on Westcliff Parade as a Grade II listed structure. Posters such as this are important examples of commercial graphic art, showing how railway companies sold not merely transport but an idealised experience of sunshine, fresh air, family recreation and modern mobility. The surviving design is held in the Science Museum Group collection under object number 1978-9514
the artist is not identified in the official catalogue.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TN1 - A new park named Airlift Hill by local school children has been officially opened on the former Burtonwood Airbase site in Great Sankey, Warrington.
Airlift Hill will provide a nature haven and peaceful walking route for new homeowners, the business park and the wider community with over 40,000 new trees planted and thousands of metres of hedgerow created.
The park boasts views as far as Manchester and showcases the fascinating history of the site with a restored Pickett-Hamilton Fort at the base of the hill. Having opened in 1940, RAF Burtonwood was the UK's largest military airbase during World War II and was responsible for the handling of over 15,000 US aircraft.
Following the Second World War the base supported allied forces in the Berlin Airlift, which saw supplies such as coal and flour sent to the people of Berlin as they were kept under a soviet blockade.
A competition was held to name the new park with the children of Barrow Hall Lane Primary School tasked with the challenge of coming up with suggestions based on the history of the site. Freya Johnson's suggestion of Airlift Hill was the winner and she was awarded a commemorative plaque so she can remember her achievement in the future.
The park is managed by the Land Trust, a national land management charity who manage over 80 green spaces in the UK, including several spots in Warrington.
Euan Hall, Chief Executive of the Land Trust, officially opened the park
Barrow Hall Primary School looks onto the park and the children will be using the site for regular outdoor classes. Sisters Pippa and Tegan Walmsley, aged seven and eight-years-old, suggested the name The Landings for the park, which will now be the name for the outdoor classroom area on the hill. Pippa and Tegan were awarded a certificate to commemorate naming the area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TN4 - A Pickett-Hamilton fort is a type of hardened field fortification built in Britain during the invasion crisis of 1940“1941. The Pickett-Hamilton fort was designed to be lowered into the ground while it was not in use, to become inconspicuous and not interfere with the passage of taxiing aircraft or other vehicles. The fort could be raised to about 2 feet 6 inches (0.76 m) above ground level where it would be a physical impediment to aircraft and vehicles and from where a small crew could fire with rifles or light machine guns.
Development
By reason of its forming no obstacle to use of ground for flying or traffic, the post can be sited in places where not even a rifleman or small post can be put, and can bring fire on to ground which otherwise could not be covered at all or only at extreme ranges.
“ Pickett-Hamilton Fort Advisory Committee (1940)
The open spaces of airfields were very vulnerable to attack by airborne troops and it was felt that it was particularly important to defend them effectively. However, conventional defences such as pillboxes and trenches could not be installed without danger to friendly aircraft. At this time a number of private companies contacted the government with their own design ideas.
The Pickett-Hamilton fort was designed by Francis Norman Pickett and Donald St Aubyn Hamilton. Pickett (1887“1957) was an engineer. He graduated from London University in 1907, and from 1918 to 1931 he was Proprietor of the firm of F. N. Pickett et Fils, engaged on the demolition of ammunition. This business encountered many difficulties but Pickett made a great deal of money before the company eventually failed. Pickett spent much of the early '20s involved in motor racing. He subsequently became managing director of Kaycee, Ltd., in 1931“35, of Consolidated Rubber Manufacturers, Ltd., in 1935“38, and of Ocean Salts (Products), Ltd., in 1938. Hamilton (1907“1956) was an architect based in London. Later, as part of Donald Hamilton, Wakeford & Partners

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TNB - Two bespoke commemorative benches have been installed at Airlift Hill, a new park opened on the former Burtonwood Airbase site.
The benches commemorate the work of the American personnel who served at RAF Burtonwood from 1940 to its closure in 1993, and the vital role that RAF Burtonwood played in the Berlin Airlift.
RAF Burtonwood was opened in 1940 and was transferred to the US military in June 1942, during which time it became the largest air base in Europe during the Second World War.
In June 1948, and after the post-war division of Germany, the Soviet Union closed all the roads, railways and canals from Western-occupied Germany into Western-occupied Berlin.
The Western Allies responded with the Berlin Airlift between June 1948 and September 1949, supplying the people of West Berlin with all their needs in the biggest air lift in history.
RAF Burtonwood played a central and vital role in the success of the airlift, with every C-54 Skymaster involved in the Berlin Airlift being serviced at the base.
After the war and role in the Berlin Airlift, RAF Burtonwood became a major equipment storage and supply centre for the US in Europe before its eventual closure in 1993.
The two bespoke benches now in place at Airlift Hill were designed in collaboration with Aldon Ferguson, president of the RAF Burtonwood Association, funded by Omega Warrington and were installed next to Pickett-Hamilton Fort.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYA7 - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English cēping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Real Cyder has been made in the traditional way from our East Devon orchards at Clyst St Lawrence for at least the past 100 years that we know of. Looking at old maps of the local area it's probably much longer than that and the documented history of Devon Cyder extends to more like 300 - 400 years.
Whiteways Orchard Heritage
The famous Whiteways Devon Cyder Company were based 2 miles from us and for nearly a century, the orchards surrounding us were nurtured and used to make their Devon Cyder. Famously Whiteways exported thousands of gallons of Cyder to America during the post-prohibition era. In it's heyday the orchards at Whimple were known to be the most extensive in the world. Whiteway's closed in 1985 due to the decline in popularity and the factory land was sold of for housing. The orchards, including our own became redundant for many years but have now, thankfully found a new lease of life due to the renewed interest in Real Cyder.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPH6PF - During the 1930's and 40's the clubs and speakeasies of Chicago and New York swung to the Big Band sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and countless others. We got to know this music by the radio and by the military bands like Glenn Miller's band during WW2. This became the British dance band sound that stayed popular in the 50's and 60's. Whereas jazz musicians tend to prefer the swinging groove of the earlier bands, the British audience still has a nostalgia for the Miller sound. We hope to offer both.
In Hereford, saxophone players Mancell Burgess and Les Causer got together to bring this music alive, with their friends playing brass and forming a rhythm section. Early Hereford bands were called the Paramount Orchestra and the Russ Allen Dance Orchestra which played regularly at the Park Hall Wormelow.
Mancell Burgess and Les Causer were Musical Directors of the band with Ray Walters sometimes taking a turn to lead. An early member of the band was Kenny Powell, previously a member of an RAF Band (now retired to grow prize cucumbers!) who brought authenticity to HBB performances!
Eventually this became the Hereford Big Band.
As the band is well-known for its performances of the music of Glenn Miller there have been some very special 40s events at RAF Cosford, at Shobdon Airfield and at Tenbury Wells.
The band has been as far afield as Calne, Wiltshire, Shrewsbury, Llandrindod Wells and Rhayadar
A singer is very often available to add that further excitement and interest to an HBB performance. The band has been privileged to include the outstanding singing of Beth Hippard and Lorna Dale, as well as their current splendid and versatile vocalist Terence Rowberry.
Hereford Big Band has been led by several further expert Musical Directors, including Pete Groves, Chris White and Andi Licqurish. The band's current Director is Pete Fletcher, versatile musician, teacher and technician who brings the band bang up-to-date

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K244BY - How to make a phone call from a button A and button B public phone
In order to make a call from a public phone box, you had to have the right coins. This was not too onerous because coins were in everyday use as there were no credit cards. Nevertheless, it was not at all unusual to be stopped in the street and asked if one had change for a phone call. People always tried to oblige each other in this respect, and I never knew of anyone getting mugged when they got out a purse or delved into their pockets for money.
Callers put their coins into the coin slot, dialled the number they wanted and pressed Button A to be heard or Button B to get their money back if no-one answered.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8DYJY - . Yellow Avery Hardell petrol pump gas gallons station. Photographed on 18 May 2013. In the longer view, automotive history is visible in body shapes, registration plates, branding and roadside infrastructure
The move from staffed garages and mechanical pumps to self-service filling stations mirrors wider changes in retail, technology and car ownership. From a heritage perspective, stations and railway infrastructure are both working transport assets and historical records
Their changing operators, signage, ticketing systems, rolling stock and architecture chart the development of British rail travel from the Victorian era to modern inter-city and commuter services. Current 2026 relevance comes from the fact that transport policy is steadily shifting attention from petrol and diesel towards electric vehicles and lower emissions, increasing the heritage value of traditional fuel pumps, classic cars and older motoring infrastructure. As of 2026, rail reform gives this type of image extra context
The government is legislating for Great British Railways to coordinate infrastructure, services, fares and timetables, while historic operator liveries and station equipment increasingly become records of the post-privatisation era. In historical terms, cars and garage equipment are part of twentieth-century material culture
Imported American models, British registrations, oil-company branding and automated car washes each represent different aspects of the expanding motoring economy. From a heritage perspective, motoring objects and vehicles chart the development of mass car ownership, styling, fuel retail and road culture
Classic cars, petrol pumps and service-station equipment can identify a period through design details that disappeared as vehicles and forecourts became standardised. Other closely matched search terms include motoring heritage, automobile, service station, vintage vehicle, car culture, road transport, motor vehicle, and historic vehicle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HWBM - . Old suitcases on a GWR English railway platform. Photographed on 16 January 2013. The recorded location is Winchcombe Station, Gloucester, England UK. (Winchcombe Gloucestershire) England. The historical context is that railway scenes connect industrial-age engineering with everyday passenger mobility
Station architecture, platforms, signal boxes, ticketing and rolling stock show how the network has evolved from steam and regional companies through British Rail, privatisation and today's increasingly digital passenger railway. In historical terms, older buildings and artefacts provide tangible evidence that written records cannot fully replace
Their wear, construction, signage and setting help researchers understand local history, design, industry and social life across different periods. In historical terms, printed and graphic ephemera are highly effective dating evidence
Tickets, labels, cards, stamps, posters and logos combine wording, typography, colour and branding in forms that are often discarded after use, so surviving examples can become valuable records of popular culture and commerce. The subject remains topical in 2026 because britain's railway is in another period of structural change as legislation for Great British Railways progresses, bringing infrastructure and passenger services into a more unified publicly owned model
Images of earlier operators, ticket machines and station branding help illustrate how quickly the passenger railway changes. During 2026, heritage remains economically and culturally significant through tourism, education and place-making, while the cost of maintaining historic fabric creates continuing debate about conservation and reuse. Against the 2026 backdrop, heritage remains economically and culturally significant through tourism, education and place-making, while the cost of maintaining historic fabric creates continuing debate about conservation and reuse.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0NM7 - . Old style Mullard triode valve sitting on a printed circuit vacuum valves wiring diagram from 1960. In historical terms, technology objects become historical remarkably quickly
Telephones, calculators, cameras, valves, televisions and workplace machines chart successive shifts from mechanical and analogue systems to electronics, digital processing, smartphones and cloud-connected services. In historical terms, mechanical calculators, time clocks and electronic valves belong to successive generations of office and industrial technology before solid-state electronics and networked computers became dominant
Their keys, dials, circuits and mechanisms make visible tasks that contemporary digital systems perform almost invisibly. In historical terms, older buildings and artefacts provide tangible evidence that written records cannot fully replace
Their wear, construction, signage and setting help researchers understand local history, design, industry and social life across different periods. During 2026, technology is dominated by connected devices, cloud services and rapid product cycles
Historic hardware therefore offers a useful counterpoint to contemporary debates about electronic waste, right-to-repair, data dependence and the speed with which once-common devices become obsolete. During 2026, calculation, payroll, attendance and communications are largely software-based, while vintage office and electronic equipment survives mainly in museums, collections and specialist restoration
Such objects are increasingly useful for illustrating the material history behind contemporary digital work. In the longer view, everyday technology provides a compact history of design and changing behaviour
Rotary dials, thermionic valves, mechanical keypads, film cameras and early televisions were once ordinary equipment but now illustrate obsolete standards, manufacturing methods and patterns of work or communication.
