Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWXD - A commemorative sculpture showing two opposing First World War soldiers meeting and shaking hands, symbolising the Christmas Truce of 1914 when British and German troops briefly laid down their weapons along sections of the Western Front. The figures are portrayed in period military greatcoats and helmets, leaning forward in a gesture of mutual respect and humanity.
The sculpture is installed in the garden of St Luke's Church, widely known as Liverpool's Bombed Out Church, itself a powerful symbol of conflict and loss after being destroyed during the Second World War Blitz. The presence of red remembrance poppies in the foreground reinforces themes of sacrifice, memory and peace.
Created by Liverpool-based sculptor Andy Edwards, the artwork forms part of temporary and permanent installations that use public art to engage with shared historical memory. Set within a central urban space, the piece connects international wartime history with Liverpool's own experiences of conflict, resilience and remembrance, attracting visitors, historians and photographers throughout the year, particularly around Remembrance Sunday and Christmas.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23R1 - Filey is a seaside town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located between Scarborough and Bridlington on Filey Bay. Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort. According to the 2011 UK census, Filey parish had a population of 6,981, in comparison to the 2001 UK census population figure of 6,819, and a population of 6,870 in 1991.
Filey was historically mainly within the East Riding of Yorkshire, although until 1888 a small part of the town, including its parish church, was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1974 the town was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire.
Filey is at the eastern end of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath
it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has since been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey. It is one of the largest coastal developments of this kind in the UK and the first homes were completed in 2007.
In July 2007 Filey was hit by flash floods which caused major problems

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AR6MY2 - The Preston Pals War Memorial was installed on Preston Railway Station in July 2012. Situated between platforms 3 & 4, it honours the men who volunteered to fight in World War One within 7th Battalion, the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (now part of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment).
Until the plaque was put in place there was no official Memorial to the Preston Pals, so a board of trustees was created by Andrew Mather to honour the men who left from Preston Railway Station on their fateful journeys
Soon after the outbreak of war between Great Britain and Germany on 4 August 1914, Earl Kitchener, the War Minister, laid plans to raise a New Army of volunteer recruits. To aid this scheme, he encouraged local councils to establish what became known as Pals battalions, made up of groups of friends and neighbours who were keen to fight alongside each other, rather than being individually assigned to regular army regiments.
The raising of the Preston Pals was first proposed by Mr Cyril Cartmell, son of the Mayor of Preston, Councillor (later Sir) Harry Cartmell. On 31 August 1914, Cyril Cartmell placed the following advertisement in The Lancashire Daily Post:
It is proposed to form a Company of young businessmen, clerks, etc, to be drawn from Preston and the surrounding districts, and be attached, if practicable, to a battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Will those who would like to join apply here any afternoon or evening this week ? the earlier the better.
Within two days, 250 local men had volunteered for service, and the Preston Businessmen and Clerks' Company ? officially 'D' Company, 7th (Service) Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment ?, was formed. Three other companies making up the 7th (Service) Battalion were filled by Pals from Blackpool, Kirkham, and Chorley. The men were medically examined at the Public Hall, and on 7 Sep 1914, the Pals paraded before an enthusiastic and patriotic crowd before boarding trains

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFMK11 - Bridgwater War Memorial is a Grade II* listed war memorial located on King Square in Bridgwater, Somerset, England, on the site previously occupied by Bridgwater Castle. It was designed by John Angel in the mid-1920s. The green figure of the memorial is allegorical, representing Civilization as a seated female, holding a globe in one hand and with the book of knowledge on her lap.
John Angel sculpted the Angel of Bridgwater. Mounted on a plinth, a female figure of 'Civilisation' lofts the world, which is encircled by emblems of commerce and peace. Under her foot are the demons of war. The throne and figure are backed by relief depictions of Labour, Home, Life and Education. On her lap is a book of laws, and she is surrounded by children. Indeed, given its monumental breadth, the many details in the design, and its metaphorical and iconic form, the sculpture is subject to colorful and variant interpretations and description. The bronze was cast by W Morris Art Bronze Foundry
At the time, Angel was working four years as assistant to Sir George Frampton,[2] and Frampton's influence is apparent. Figures from the roughly contemporaneous Exeter War Memorial, specifically Peace (also known as Victory) were exhibited by Angel at The Royal Academy in 1922, being exhibited in the courtyard of Burlington House,[8] as were other studies of the Bridgwater War Memorial on several occasions.
On the third step these words are inscribed: IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF BRIDGWATER WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918
The memorial was unveiled by General the Earl of Cavan then Chief of the Imperial General Staff on 25 September 1924, to commemorate the fallen of World War I. Further names have been added following World War II, the Korean War. Falklands Conflict and the Afghan conflict. It has been characterised as, An exceptionally fine and moving memorial, which forms an important focal point to this fine late Georgian square.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGHP - The 6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, was a Territorial Force (TF) unit of the British Army. Formed in 1908 from Volunteer units recruited in Cheshire since 1859, it was one of the first TF units to go to the Western Front in World War I. It had a wandering existence, moving frequently from one command to another, seeing a considerable amount of combat at the Somme, Ypres, during the German Spring Offensive and in the final Allied Hundred Days Offensive. After the war it was amalgamated into a local artillery regiment.
An invasion scare in 1859 led to the emergence of the Volunteer Movement, and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVCs) began to be organised throughout Great Britain to supplement the Regular Army and Militia. A large number of small RVCs were formed in Cheshire and formed into five administrative battalions. The 4th Administrative Battalion, based at Stockport, comprised the following units:
9th (Mottram) Cheshire RVC, raised at Mottram in Longendale 10 February 1860 under Captain Alfred K. Sidebottom, disbanded February 1861
13th (Dukinfield) Cheshire RVC, 20 February 1860 under Capt Francis Dukinfield Palmer Astley, was raised by the Astley family who owned the coalmines at Dukinfield, and known unofficially as the 'Astley Rifles'
a 2nd Company was formed on 15 November 1860 and a 3rd in March 1869
headquarters moved to Newton Moor, near Hyde, in 1863, then to Stalybridge in 1873
17th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 20 August 1860 under Capt Henry Coppock
18th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 12 March 1860 under Capt John Thomas Emmerson
19th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 15 March 1860 under Capt Samuel W. Wilkinson
20th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 20 March 1860 under Capt Thomas H. Sykes
21st (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 22 March 1860 under Capt Cephas John Howard
29th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 10 April 1860 under Capt John M. Lingard, formerly of the 1st Royal Cheshire Militia

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GRYH - Bridgwater War Memorial is a Grade II* listed war memorial located on King Square in Bridgwater, Somerset, England, on the site previously occupied by Bridgwater Castle.
The bronze was cast by W Morris Art Bronze Foundry.
At the time, Angel was working four years as assistant to Sir George Frampton, and Frampton's influence is apparent.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PYX9B0 - The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who have died in war, and represents a common or field poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Inspired by the World War I poem In Flanders Fields, and promoted by Moina Michael, they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (1914?1918). They were then adopted by military veterans' groups in parts of the British Empire.
Today, they are mostly used in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, to commemorate their servicemen and women killed in all conflicts. There, small artificial poppies are often worn on clothing leading up to Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, and poppy wreaths are often laid at war memorials. In Australia and New Zealand, they are also worn on Anzac Day.
The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal has caused some controversy, with some?including British Army veterans?arguing that it has become excessive, is being used to marshal support behind British military campaigns, and that public figures are pressured to wear poppies.
In the United Kingdom, remembrance poppies are sold by The Royal British Legion (RBL). This is a charity providing financial, social, political and emotional support to those who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. They are sold on the streets by volunteers in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The remembrance poppy is the trademark of The Royal British Legion. The RBL state, The red poppy is our registered mark and its only lawful use is to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal
its yearly fundraising drive in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The RBL says these poppies are worn to commemorate the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and to show support to those still serving today. Other poppy merchandise is sold throughout the year as part of the ongoing fundraising.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY08RX - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873?74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873?74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about ?œ4,000

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PKG - The Usher Hall is a 5 star concert hall, situated on Lothian Road, in the west end of Edinburgh, Scotland. It has hosted concerts and events since its construction in 1914 and can hold approximately 2,200 people in its recently restored auditorium, which is well loved by performers due to its acoustics. The Hall is flanked by The Royal Lyceum Theatre on the right and The Traverse Theatre on the left. Historic Scotland has registered the Hall with Category A listed building status.
The construction of the hall was funded by Andrew Usher, a whisky distiller and blender, who donated ?œ100,000 to the city specifically to fund a new concert hall. The choice of site caused early delays but in 1910 an architectural competition was announced with the requirement that the hall be simple but dignified. The winning bid (one of 130 entries) came from Stockdale Harrison & Howard H Thomson of Leicester. The design was partly a backlash against Victorian Gothic, with a return to classical features owing much to the Beaux-Arts style. On 19 July 1911, George V and Queen Mary laid two memorial stones, an event attended by over a thousand people.

The Church stands not east-west but square to the Roman Road north through Carlisle (the A6, in town Blackfriars St). It is therefore of early foundation, perhaps before St Cuthbert's visit to Carlisle in 685. The present Church, probably the fourth on the site, dates from 1778.
It has a unique moving pulpit, a fourteenth century window, a window commemorating our hospitality to a Latvian Lutheran congregation, and a very attractive series of windows depicting the life of St Cuthbert. It is open every day during daylight hours. Our motto is: Christian Hospitality

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KGP - This image shows a red poppy wreath laid against a stone war memorial in Grappenhall and Thelwall, near Warrington in Cheshire, as part of Remembrance Day commemorations. The memorial bears the names of local men who lost their lives during the First World War, with dates spanning 1914 to 1918 carved into the stone.
The poppy wreath, traditionally associated with remembrance in the UK and Commonwealth countries, symbolises sacrifice, loss, and collective memory. Its placement reflects long-standing national and local customs observed each November to honour those who served and died in conflict.
Village and parish war memorials such as this play a central role in community remembrance, providing a focal point for ceremonies, silence, and reflection. The close-up framing highlights the contrast between the bright red poppies and the weathered stone inscription, reinforcing the enduring connection between present-day remembrance and historic loss.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering Remembrance Day, First World War history, local heritage, civic commemoration, and the continuing cultural importance of war memorials within British towns and villages.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1ME - Stornoway (Gaelic: Ste?ýrnabhagh) is a town on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) of Scotland.
The town's population is around 8,000, making it the largest town in the Hebrides, with a third of the population of the civil parish of Stornoway, which includes various nearby villages and has a population of approximately 12,000.
Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) and a variety of educational, sporting and media establishments. Observance of the Christian Sabbath (Sunday) has long been an aspect of the island's culture. Recent changes mean that Sunday on Lewis is now less different from Sunday on the other Western Isles or the mainland of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEFEJ - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common
